Santa Maria di Castellabate: Suspended Time on the Cilento's Tyrrhenian Coast

In the heart of the Cilento National Park, a nearly unknown fishing village guards a marine reserve and a pace of life that mass tourism has spared.

There is a part of the Campanian coast that is not the Amalfi Drive, not Capri, not Positano. It's the Cilento, and within the Cilento lies Santa Maria di Castellabate: a fishing village on the Tyrrhenian that overlooks a bay whose water has been classified as "excellent" every year for twenty consecutive years. The town is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage territory that almost nobody actually visits.

The Marine Reserve and the Cilento's Waters

The Marine Protected Area of Santa Maria di Castellabate covers thirteen kilometers of coastline, with rocky seabeds and meadows of Posidonia oceanica. Posidonia is the indicator of a healthy marine ecosystem: where it grows, the waters are clean and fish are plentiful. Divers and snorkelers find here an underwater world still intact, with gorgonians, moray eels, groupers, and octopus in the shallows. Guided dives depart from the port at twenty to thirty euros per person.

The Village and Community Life

Santa Maria di Castellabate doesn't have many monuments in the traditional sense. Instead, it has something rarer: a living community. The waterfront is animated by families, fishermen, children on bicycles. The morning fish market sells anchovies, flying squid, and shrimp caught the night before. The upper village, Castellabate, sits four kilometers away and commands the bay from above with a medieval castle: the view of the Tyrrhenian and the islands of Capri and Ischia on clear days rewards the entire climb.

Mediterranean Diet and Cilento Cuisine

The Cilento is the scientific birthplace of the Mediterranean diet: it was here that Ancel Keys in the 1950s studied the local populations and formulated his theory. Traditional dishes — anchovies with lemon, fusilli with fried anchovies, buffalo mozzarella from the nearby plains — have not yet been turned into tourist products. A full meal at one of the little port restaurants costs twelve to twenty euros. The best months are June and September, when the sea is warm but the town still belongs to its residents.
