There are places you don't visit by chance: you have to decide to climb up to them. The Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo opens on the western slope of Monte Raione, above Olevano sul Tusciano, in the hinterland of Salerno. Not a building raised on stone, but a vast natural cavity in the mountain, where human hands have inserted themselves among stalactites and living rock to create a rock-cut sanctuary.

The rock sanctuary

Inside the cave lies an early medieval religious complex of extraordinary importance, largely dating to the 9th and 10th centuries, in the Lombard period. It contains several distinct structures: a small single-nave basilica with traces of frescoes, a few chapels, an oratory. The result is one of the best-preserved early medieval settlements in Europe, a fact recognised internationally: in 1996 the World Monuments Fund included the site among the hundred monuments of the world worth saving.

Getting there

And yet very few tourists ever make it here. The reason is simple and part of the appeal: the cave can only be reached on foot. Two paths climb up from the hamlets of Ariano and Salitto and rejoin just before the entrance, where a stairway leads to the opening. It is about half an hour uphill, through woodland and past glimpses of the Tusciano valley, before you cross the dark, cool threshold of the mountain.

The visit

Entry inside is free, but it is worth booking a guided tour: the cavity is not always open and it is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties. One of the most heartfelt days is 29 September, the feast of San Michele, when the sanctuary once again becomes a place of popular devotion, as it has been for centuries.

When to go

Go in the shoulder seasons, when the heat doesn't make the climb tiring and the paths are dry. Leave the car in the hamlets, climb up unhurried, respect the silence of the cave and the fragility of the frescoes. It is an authentic alternative to the more crowded sanctuaries: a piece of the Middle Ages left in its place, reached only by those willing to seek it out.
