Grotta delle Ninfe in Cerchiara: The Magical Spring of Deep Calabria

Cerchiara di Calabria is a mountain town in the Cosenza hinterland, at the foot of the Pollino massif. Here, in a rocky gorge above the town, a natural spring has fed for centuries what locals call the Grotta delle Ninfe: a natural pool of cool, crystal-clear water, set between walls of limestone rock, in a landscape of rare wild beauty. Technically these are not hot thermal waters like Saturnia or San Filippo, but cool spring waters with mild mineral properties, used for centuries to treat skin conditions.

The Trail and the Natural Pool

From the town of Cerchiara you climb toward the mountain along a marked trail that takes about forty minutes on foot. The natural pool sits in a rocky basin, fed by a spring that flows directly from the limestone wall. The water is cool — around 18-20 degrees even in summer — and extraordinarily clear, with a turquoise color reminiscent of certain Alpine lakes. Access is free. There are no facilities, no managers.

The Legend of the Nymphs and the Water Cult

Local tradition holds that the grotto was inhabited by water nymphs, benevolent spirits who healed the skin ailments of those who bathed in their waters. The cult of springs is very ancient in Calabria, layered upon Greek, Roman, and later Christian substrates. Traces of human activity dating to prehistory have been found in the area. Today the grotto is a place of informal pilgrimage: Calabrians come in summer to escape the heat, families on weekends, hikers walking the Pollino trails.

Cerchiara di Calabria lies on the edge of the Pollino National Park, Italy's largest national park by area. The town itself has a compact, well-preserved historic center, with narrow alleys and stone houses. Nearby are the Raganello Gorges, among the most spectacular canyons in the southern Apennines, explorable with local guides. Those who love wild, uncrowded nature will find in this corner of Calabria an extraordinary territory almost completely ignored by mass tourism.
