Day 1: the heart of Alberobello
Morning: Rione Monti and the historic trulli
Begin your day in Rione Monti, the most famous quarter with over a thousand trulli arranged along sloping lanes. Arrive early, before 9am, to enjoy the morning light without the crowds. Walk along Via Monte Nero and Via Monte Pasubio, observing the symbols painted on the conical roofs: crosses, hearts and zodiac signs with apotropaic meanings.
Do not miss the Trullo Siamese, a double construction with two cones and two entrances on different streets, tied to a legend of two brothers in love with the same woman. Continue to the Church of Sant'Antonio, the only church in the world built in the shape of a trullo, with its dome rising above the neighbourhood rooftops.
Afternoon: Rione Aia Piccola and Trullo Sovrano
After lunch, cross the main road and reach Rione Aia Piccola, far less touristy than Rione Monti. Here the trulli are still inhabited and the atmosphere is genuine and intimate. Wander aimlessly through the quiet alleys.
Then climb to the Trullo Sovrano, the only two-storey trullo, now a museum that illustrates daily life in the stone dwellings. Its small terrace offers a lovely view over the surrounding rooftops.
Evening: sunset from the Belvedere
End the day at the Belvedere in Piazza del Popolo, where you can take in the entire Rione Monti bathed in sunset light. The conical roofs turning gold are an unforgettable sight.
Day 2: hidden corners and surroundings
Morning: trulli outside the centre
Spend the morning exploring the trulli scattered across the surrounding countryside. A few minutes from the centre, along the road to Noci, you will find farmhouses and isolated trulli amid centuries-old olive trees. This is the authentic Alberobello, far from the souvenir shops.
Stop at Casa Pezzolla, a complex of fifteen interconnected trulli housing the Territory Museum, with artefacts about the area's rural history.
Afternoon: excursion in the Itria Valley
The afternoon is perfect for an excursion to nearby towns. Locorotondo is just 9 km away and is worth visiting for its white houses with cummerse roofs and breathtaking views over the valley. Alternatively, Cisternino offers an intimate old town and a culinary tradition linked to its ready-to-cook butcher shops.
If you prefer nature, the Castellana Caves are a 20-minute drive away and offer an underground journey through stalactites and stalagmites in spectacular caverns.
Evening: night stroll
Return to Alberobello for an evening walk through the illuminated Rione Monti. The soft lights filtering through the small trulli windows create a magical and silent atmosphere.
