Ihlara Valley: The Canyon Where Cappadocia Hides Its Rock-Cut Churches

A 14-km canyon with a hundred Byzantine churches carved into the rock, a river and not a single hot air balloon: Ihlara is the Cappadocia you walk through.

Everyone knows Cappadocia for the hot air balloons above Göreme. But 80 kilometres to the south-west, where no balloon reaches, a canyon 100 metres deep has been carved by the Melendiz river through volcanic rock — the Ihlara Valley. Along its walls, between the 6th and 13th centuries, Byzantine monks hollowed out more than a hundred rock-cut churches, many of which still preserve their original frescoes.

The canyon

You descend into the valley down a staircase of 382 steps that carries you from the canyon rim to the riverbed. The path follows the watercourse for 14 kilometres, threading between poplars, willows and vegetable gardens. The air is cool even in midsummer — the canyon creates a humid microclimate that contrasts sharply with the aridity of the plateau above.

The frescoed churches

The most important churches are the Yilanli Kilise (Church of the Serpents, with a fresco of Hell where sinners are devoured by snakes), the Kokar Kilise (Fragrant Church, with 10th-century frescoes) and the Eğritaş Kilisesi (with scenes of the Annunciation). Many churches are open and accessible — you enter by ducking low and find yourself in spaces carved from the rock with vaulted ceilings, columns and niches, everything lit by the light filtering through the entrance.

Selime and the monastery

At the northern end of the valley, the Selime Monastery is the largest rock-cut complex in Cappadocia — a cathedral, a kitchen, stables and monks' quarters, all carved into a rocky formation that resembles a natural fortress. It was here that George Lucas found inspiration for Mos Eisley in Star Wars.

How to organise the visit

From Göreme: 80 km, reachable by hire car or organised tour (which usually also includes the underground monastery of Derinkuyu). The full valley trek takes 4–5 hours. A shorter section can be done (Ihlara–Belisirma, 3.5 km, 1 hour). In low season (November–March) the canyon is almost deserted. Best time: April–June and September–October.
