Valbona: mountain Albania, beyond the beaches
Everyone rushes to the Albanian coast. The interior, made of glacial valleys and stone villages, stays empty and spectacular.

Albania has exploded as a seaside destination, with the beaches of the Ionian Riviera now besieged every summer. But its most authentic soul isn't on the coast: it lives high up, among the peaks of the Albanian Alps, the range many know by the evocative name of the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemúna). It's here, in the remote north of the country, that the slow traveller still finds an Albania off the beaten track.
The Valbona valley
The Valbona valley, the heart of the national park of the same name, is the ideal starting point. The most striking way to reach it is already a journey within the journey: from the town of Shkodër you climb towards the Koman reservoir and cross the lake by ferry, gliding for hours between sheer rock walls plunging into the water, where the mountains close in like a fjord. From there you continue by road to the valley floor. It's worth remembering that the ferry operates only in the warm season, roughly from April to November.
A rural world
Once you arrive, it's nature that sets the pace. Dolomite-like peaks rise above meadows and woods, streams run clear among the stones, and in the villages you still come across the kulla, the traditional grey-stone tower houses with wooden roofs. The hospitality is genuine, made of family-run guesthouses where you eat what the valley produces. It's a rural world that has vanished elsewhere and survives here, to be respected with discretion.
The trek to Theth
The most beloved experience is the trek linking Valbona to Theth, one of the most beautiful routes in Europe. The trail crosses the Valbona pass, at around 1,800 metres, and takes seven to ten hours of walking and a decent pair of legs to tackle the steeper sections. In Theth await the village's historic church, the waterfalls and the famous Blue Eye, a spring of crystalline waters. For now relatively few people walk this trek, but its fame is growing fast.
When to go
The right time to go, avoiding the crush of July and August, is late spring or early autumn: most hikers arrive between June and September, while May–June and September–October offer quieter trails and better light. Go at an easy pace, and before it becomes everyone's next cover shot.
Getting there
The classic route runs via the ferry on Lake Koman: from Shkodër you reach the Koman boarding point by van, cross the lake to Fierza and from there continue by minibus towards Bajram Curri and the Valbona valley. Alternatively you can arrive overland, climbing up from Kukës. From Tirana, the reference international airport, the trip takes several hours via Shkodër; it's worth checking ferry schedules in advance and booking in the summer months.
