Kruja, the eagle's nest that guards the soul of Albania

Above Tirana, Kruja combines a castle overlooking the plain with a still-living Ottoman bazaar: the authentic soul of Albania.

Less than an hour from Tirana airport, yet overlooked by the great tourist flows, Kruja clings to a rocky ridge like a balcony jutting out over the plain. The road climbs in hairpin bends among olive trees and rocks, and when you arrive the little town welcomes you unhurried: few cars, elders sitting outside the shops, the outline of the castle cutting into the sky. It is one of those places where you realise at once that you have arrived somewhere real, not in a postcard built for the visitor.

The heart of the visit is the old bazaar, a covered paved street where wooden shops sell carpets, beaten copper, handicrafts and textiles. Unlike so many tourist markets, here many artisans still work right in front of you, and haggling over a price becomes a conversation, not a performance. Climbing up, you reach the fortress, tied to the figure of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero who resisted the raids from these walls. Inside you find a museum dedicated to him and a small ethnographic museum housed in an Ottoman house, which recounts domestic life of times past.

The beauty of Kruja is what surrounds it. From the ramparts your gaze runs all the way to the sea on clear days, and the trails towards Mount Sari Salltik offer solitary walks among stone and wind. To eat here means to sit down in a tavern at honest prices, with dishes of grilled meat, mountain cheeses and honey-sweetened desserts, served with a hospitality you do not forget.

Come to Kruja to slow down. Stop and sleep a night instead of treating it as a hit-and-run day trip from Tirana: in the evening, when the coaches leave, the village returns to those who live there, and you become part of that silence.

How to get there

Kruja is very close to Tirana airport, reachable in about half an hour by car: you take the motorway towards Durrës and then follow the exit for Krujë, with the final climb up to the historic centre at the foot of the castle. There is no direct bus from the airport, so taxi or rental car is the most convenient choice; alternatively you go first via the Tirana bus terminal.
