Lamu: The Car-Free Island Where Kenya Speaks Ancient Swahili
Wooden dhows, coral houses, donkeys instead of cars and a thousand-year-old Swahili culture: Lamu is the Africa that safari tourism never tells you about.

Lamu is an island off the northern coast of Kenya, close to the border with Somalia. Its old town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa, founded in the 12th century. There are no cars on the island: you get around on foot, by boat or on donkey-back.
The old town
The alleys of Lamu are narrow — so narrow that two people struggle to pass each other. The houses are built in blocks of coral and lime, with carved wooden doors (the door signals the family's status) and internal courtyards with wells. The architecture blends Arab, Indian, Portuguese and African influences into a single unique style — the Swahili style. The Lamu Fort (19th century), the Lamu Museum and the Riyadha mosque are the main landmarks.
The dhows and the sea
Dhows — the traditional sailing vessels of the Indian Ocean — are still the main means of transport between the islands. A dhow excursion at sunset, the lateen sail filling with wind as the coast falls away, is an experience that carries you back centuries. The beaches of Shela (12 km of white sand, almost deserted) and Manda are reachable by boat.
The Maulidi and the culture
The Maulidi — the celebration of the Prophet's birth — is Lamu's most important festival, with processions, chanting, sword dances and a dhow regatta. It draws pilgrims from across East Africa. Swahili poetry, Arabic calligraphy, the cuisine (biryani, samosa, halwa) and the crafts (wood carving, silverwork) are expressions of a thousand-year-old culture that is still very much alive here.
Practical information
From Nairobi or Mombasa: internal flights to Manda Island airport, then dhow to Lamu (20 min). Guesthouses in the old town cost 20–50 euros. Best time: July–October and January–March (dry season). Check the security situation before travelling — proximity to Somalia has brought sporadic incidents, but the town itself is generally safe.
