Carved doors, a spice market, rooftop sunsets and taarab music: Stone Town is the multicultural soul of Zanzibar, before the beach resort takes over.

Stone Town is the ancient heart of Zanzibar City, on the western coast of the island of Unguja. It is a labyrinth of alleys so narrow the sun never reaches them, built in blocks of coral and mangrove wood, with carved wooden doors — each one different, each one with a story. For centuries it was the centre of the spice, slave and ivory trade across the Indian Ocean.
The doors and the architecture
Stone Town's doors are its defining symbol: carved in dark wood with motifs that tell the story of the family — chains for merchants, lotus flowers for Indians, brass studs for Arabs. The House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib), the Sultan's Palace and the Hamamni Persian Baths are the main monuments. But the real experience is getting lost in the alleys: every turning reveals a courtyard, a mosque, a Hindu temple, a church.
The market and the spices
The Darajani Market is an assault on the senses: mounds of cloves, cinnamon, turmeric, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla. Spices are the reason Zanzibar exists as a trading crossroads. Spice tours of the inland plantations show how the spices we use every day are grown — and the fragrance is intoxicating.
Sunset and music
The Forodhani Gardens, along the seafront, transform each evening into a street food night market: octopus skewers, Zanzibari pizza, sugarcane juice. The sunset from here — dhows returning to port as the sky catches fire — is one of Africa's finest. Taarab music — a genre blending Arab melodies, African rhythms and Indian instruments — can be heard in clubs throughout the centre.
How to experience Stone Town
From Dar es Salaam: fast ferry (2 hours) or flight (20 min). Guesthouses in the historic centre start from 30 euros. Stone Town is the gateway to the beaches of the east coast (Nungwi, Paje, Jambiani) — but it deserves at least 2–3 days on its own. Best time: June–October and December–February. The «long rainy season» (March–May) is best avoided.
