Where to go in December without the crowds

December in Italy has a particular kind of hush. Days are short and the light turns amber by mid-afternoon, museums empty out, and the smell of roasted chestnuts drifts through piazzas draped in understated lights. It is arguably the country's most cinematic month, and certainly one of its most rewarding for travellers willing to look past the obvious.

Art cities reveal themselves slowly: think Bologna's porticoes glowing under low sun, Mantua's frescoes without the queue, Palermo's baroque churches lit for the Immacolata. Small towns and nature take centre stage in the Umbrian Valnerina or Emilia's Apennine hamlets, where nativity traditions still shape village life. On the third front, choose your element: powder-fresh runs in Alta Badia and Madonna di Campiglio, or a wind-swept, near-empty Adriatic coast from Rimini down to Puglia's Gargano.

The smartest approach is deliberate undertourism, swapping Venice for Chioggia, Cortina for San Vigilio di Marebbe. You will pay less, meet the same landscapes, and support communities that need winter guests.
