Terme di San Filippo: The White Cascade God Forgot in Val d'Orcia

A cascade as white as snow, shaped by millennia of thermal limestone: the free pools of San Filippo are one of Tuscany's most photogenic wonders.

In Val d'Orcia, a few kilometers from Abbadia San Salvatore, there is a geological formation that looks like it belongs on another planet. The Balena Bianca — as locals call it — is a flow of limestone deposited over the centuries by the thermal waters of San Filippo, which emerge at around 52 degrees Celsius carrying calcium carbonate that solidifies as soon as it hits the air. The result is a blindingly white cascade among beech trees, surreal and beautiful.

Free and Paid Pools: Finding Your Way

The thermal waters of San Filippo partly belong to a private facility, but the natural outdoor pools, formed spontaneously by the overflow of the springs, are freely accessible via a forest path. You enter from the provincial road near San Filippo, leave the car in a dirt clearing, and walk for about ten minutes through beech trees. The natural pools have variable temperatures, generally between 38 and 45 degrees, and are surrounded by white limestone deposits that create pools of rare beauty.

The Beech Forest and the Morning Light

Arriving at dawn is the best choice: morning mist wraps around the beeches, steam rises from the pools, and light filters obliquely through the branches. In winter the landscape is particularly spectacular, with the white formations emerging from bare vegetation. Spring brings the intense green of the forest contrasting with the white limestone. Bring hiking shoes for the trail and clothes you don't mind ruining: limestone stains swimwear.

Nearby: Val d'Orcia and Its Silences

San Filippo lies a few kilometers from Bagni San Filippo, a small spa village, and less than twenty kilometers from Piancastagnaio and Monte Amiata. Combining a thermal bath with a tour of Val d'Orcia reveals one of Italy's most pristine landscapes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where cypresses and clay ravines look as if painted. An entire day can be built around the free hot springs and the surrounding countryside, spending almost nothing.
