Lake Fiastra: The Secret Mirror of the Sibillini Mountains

Hidden among the Sibillini Mountains, Lake Fiastra is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Marche: turquoise waters, pristine woods, no crowds even in summer.

There is a moment in summer, when the sun is still low and the night mist has not fully dissolved, when Lake Fiastra takes on a color that is neither blue nor green: it is something in between, like diluted turquoise, shifting tone with the movement of clouds over the Sibillini. The artificial reservoir — built in the 1960s on the Fiastrone torrent for hydroelectric power — has over time integrated so perfectly into the mountain landscape that it looks natural. The shores are wooded down to the water, no road circumnavigates it, and in summer the water temperature is pleasant for swimming.

How to Reach the Lake and Its Shores

The main access to the lake is from the road descending from Bolognola toward the dam. There is a picnic area with tables and grills near the dam, the starting point for canoes and pedal boats available for rent in season at about 10 euros per hour. The wilder shores are reached on foot: the trail along the east side of the lake passes through an oak and hornbeam forest with wild blueberry plants, and in certain spots you arrive at gravel beaches completely isolated where nobody comes because there is no road.

The Nearby Villages and the Post-Earthquake

The 2016 earthquake severely struck the territory around Lake Fiastra. Towns like Ussita and Visso, just a few kilometers away, are still undergoing reconstruction: some hamlets remain partially closed, with civil-protection wooden houses still inhabited by residents who refused to abandon their land. Visiting these places today means participating, even just through your presence and spending, in a rebirth process that needs time and attention.

Hiking and the Sibillini Mountains

The lake is one of the starting points for hikes in the southern Sibillini Mountains. From Bolognola, at about 1,100 meters above sea level, you can reach the Monte Rotondo area (2,102 m) in a couple of hours, with views that on clear days stretch to the Adriatic and, westward, to the foothills of the Umbrian-Lazio Apennines. Accommodation in the area (agritourisms, small hotels) is mainly open in summer and on spring and autumn weekends; booking ahead is advisable in July and August.

The Landscape in Every Season

In winter the lake is almost deserted, with the snow-capped Sibillini reflected in dark water: a landscape of great severity and beauty. In spring the snow melts and the water level rises, making the color more intense. In autumn the shoreline woods become a patchwork of yellows and oranges. Summer is the busiest season, but the area's limited accommodation capacity means that even at peak times the visitor density remains low compared to the great Alpine lakes.
