There is a spot, at the end of a narrow side valley off the Val di Non, where the rock stops being an obstacle and becomes foundation. There, on a limestone spur some seventy metres high, the sanctuary of San Romedio has grown over the centuries: not a single building but a cluster of chapels and little churches that scale the cliff as if faith had decided to climb the mountain. From afar it looks like an impossible drawing, a castle of stone and devotion suspended above the woods.

The history

The story reaches back to the figure of Romedio, a hermit who lived between the fourth and fifth centuries. Tradition makes him the heir of a Bavarian family who, after a pilgrimage to Rome, gave every possession to the Church and withdrew into these solitary caves. Around his tomb, carved into the rock, the first small church arose around the year 1000. The others came later, one above the other, in a building site that lasted almost nine hundred years and set Romanesque stone, Gothic arches and later altars side by side.

The visit

The heart of the visit is the covered stairway that stitches together the different levels of the complex. You climb slowly, because every landing is taken up by ex-votos, shrines and frescoes that invite you to pause. At the base, in a natural enclosure, lives a brown bear: a nod to the legend that Romedio tamed the beast until he rode it towards Trento. It is not always visible, and that is just as well: you do not come here for a show.

Getting there

Despite being a place of pilgrimage, San Romedio remains surprisingly off the main tourist flows. The advice is to reach it on foot from Sanzeno along the path carved into the rock, leaving the car in the valley. You arrive unhurried, you speak in low voices, you respect the silence of the Franciscan friars who still watch over the place.

When to go

The best months are those of the shoulder season and early autumn, when the light slants obliquely through the woods and the valley is almost deserted. Go early in the morning: you will have the rock, the steps and the wind almost entirely to yourself.
