Oropa: The Marian Sanctuary on the Edge of the Snows
At 1,159 metres in the Biella Alps, the Sanctuary of Oropa is one of the largest Baroque complexes in Italy and a place of genuine peace among the mountains.
Every hundred years, the Archbishop of Vercelli crowns the Black Madonna of Oropa in a ceremony that draws tens of thousands of worshippers from the Po plain. Between coronations, the Sanctuary of Oropa — at 1,159 metres in the Biella Alps — keeps a monastic calm that the great lowland abbeys struggle to maintain. The Black Madonna is a medieval wooden sculpture traditionally attributed to Luke the Evangelist and brought by Saint Eusebius of Vercelli in the fourth century.
The Baroque Complex and the Upper Basilica
Oropa's architectural ensemble is one of the most imposing in mountain Piedmont: three successive squares, porticoes, guest quarters, chapels and the seventeenth-century Old Basilica housing the Black Madonna form a self-contained urban system. The Upper Basilica, begun in 1885 and completed in 1960 in monumental neoclassical style, is not the devotional heart of the sanctuary but is worth seeing for its sheer scale and the dome from which you can survey the entire Oropa basin.
The Trails Beyond the Sanctuary
From the sanctuary, trails lead to Lago del Mucrone at 1,898 metres — also reachable by chairlift — and to the Mucrone and Mars peaks, with elevation gains suited to moderately experienced hikers. In winter, snow makes the complex even more evocative; the sanctuary guest quarters offer lodging at affordable prices, around 50 euros per person for half board.
How to Get There and What to Expect
Oropa is 12 kilometres from Biella, reachable by car or by the bus service departing from Biella station. The sanctuary is open all year with free admission to the main area. The guest-house restaurant serves polenta concia and rabbit alla cacciatora; the sanctuary shop sells amaro and Biella hazelnuts.
