While visitors throng in front of the Sacra di San Michele or fill the squares of Turin, just a few kilometres from the regional capital there is a place that seems frozen in time. The Sacro Monte di Belmonte, above the village of Valperga in the heart of the Canavese, is part of the UNESCO site of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, and yet it remains one of those destinations that almost no one mentions. Here you will find no queues, tour buses or ticket lines: just a path that climbs among the chestnut trees and a handful of chapels scattered through the woods.

The devotional route

The devotional route winds along a panoramic ridge and leads, chapel after chapel, to the sanctuary at the summit. The buildings, in a baroque and folk style, hold sculptural groups and frescoes tied to the story of the Passion. Walking from one station to the next, your breath growing short on the climb and the sound of your own steps on the leaves, is an experience more meditative than touristic. From the terrace at the top the gaze sweeps over the Canavese plain, over the morainic hills and, on clear days, as far as the arc of the Alps.

How to visit

Belmonte rewards those who arrive without haste. It is best to climb on foot from the village or from the car parks lower down, bringing water and suitable shoes, and to devote at least half a day to the visit. Around it, the area offers the villages of the Canavese, the morainic lakes of Ivrea and a genuine cuisine of Alpine-pasture cheeses and little-publicised local wines.

When to go

To avoid even the modest influx of summer weekends and religious festivals, choose the off-season months and weekdays. In spring and autumn the woods change colour, the air is cool and the silence becomes the true protagonist. A slow, authentic alternative to the more well-trodden Piedmontese destinations.
