Sibillini cycling route along the river Tenna
In the Marche, at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains, the foothill roads along the river Tenna link villages, sanctuaries and Lake San Ruffino in a mountain slowly reborn: an inland area still little visited, far from the flows of the Adriatic coast.

The Sibillini Mountains are a range many Italians know only by name. In the popular imagination, the touristy Marche is above all the coast and the beaches, while the Apennine interior stays off to one side, even more so after the difficult years of the earthquake. That is precisely why cycling in the lands at the foot of the Sibillini means crossing an authentic landscape in slow rebirth, where tourism has not yet taken root and the villages keep a slow, silent rhythm.
Along the Tenna
The thread of water of this itinerary is the river Tenna, which flows down from the Sibillini and crosses the foothill countryside of the Fermo and Macerata areas. The roads accompany it among cultivated hills, rows of vines and small centres, with the peaks of the Sibillini always present on the horizon. A natural landmark is Lake San Ruffino, a small quiet reservoir set among the woods near Amandola, perfect for a stop and a gentle tour along its shores. From here the foothill roads link the villages of the area: Amandola, a lively gateway to the Sibillini, Sarnano with its splendid brick old centre and its thermal baths, Comunanza, and the villages scattered over the hills. The region is also a land of sanctuaries and places of spirituality: the most famous in the area is the Santuario della Madonna dell'Ambro, set in a narrow wooded valley at the foot of the rock walls of the Sibillini near Montefortino, but the whole territory is dotted with parish churches, hermitages and rural chapels that tell an ancient story.
The route
The route runs on low-traffic secondary roads, with a paved surface and the odd possible gravel stretch on detours towards the river or the woods. It is a foothill itinerary, therefore hilly by nature: no long climbs of pure mountain, but a continuous up and down between one valley and the next that requires a minimum of legs and steadiness. The effort is moderate and adjustable: you can choose to stay on the lower, gentler bands along the Tenna and the lake, or push towards the higher villages and get closer to the slopes of the Sibillini, where the gradients increase. It is ideal terrain for those who love touring and gravel bikes, and for those who want to alternate riding with visits to the villages.
How to get there
Reaching the Marche interior takes a little organisation: the coast, with the stations of Civitanova Marche and Fermo, is the most convenient access point by train, from which you move inland. Many choose to reach a base like Amandola or Sarnano by car and set off from there. Services are not as dense as in more touristy areas, so it is worth finding out in advance about lodging and refreshment points, especially in the smaller villages.
When to go
The best time runs from late spring to early autumn. May brings green countryside, full watercourses and blossoms, while September offers days still warm but dry, with golden light on the Sibillini. These months avoid the humid heat of high August and the uncertainty of winter, when the mountain can be cold and snowy. Crowds are never a problem here: tourism in the Sibillini is still discreet, and precisely in spring and autumn you find silent roads and villages coming back to life after the difficult years.
A practical tip: give time to Sarnano, one of the most beautiful villages in the Marche, and plan a stop at Lake San Ruffino to enjoy the calm of the water. Support the local economy by stopping at the shops and farm stays: in these valleys every purchase and every night spent truly counts for a community that is rebuilding, and the slow traveller on a bicycle is here a precious guest, not a burden.
