The Sile is the longest spring-fed river in Europe, and the cycle path that follows it is one of Veneto's best-kept secrets. From Treviso to Venice's northern lagoon is around 50 kilometres of almost entirely flat riding, immersed in a nature park that feels impossible given how close it lies to the motorway and the crowds of Piazza San Marco.
You begin in the centre of Treviso, where the Sile flows peacefully between frescoed palaces and hidden gardens. The cycle path leaves the city and within minutes you're in open countryside: grassy riverbanks, reed beds, old watermills still standing. The river is slow and green, inhabited by herons, kingfishers and coypus. Barely a sound reaches you, save for water and wind.
The central stretch crosses the Treviso countryside with its understated Venetian villas, cultivated fields and willow groves. You pass through Casier, Casale sul Sile, Quinto di Treviso — villages that still live by farming and craft, where a cyclist is an ordinary sight rather than a novelty. The osterie along the route serve cicchetti and prosecco at prices that would be unimaginable in Venice.
The final stretch, toward Portegrandi and the lagoon, is the most evocative. The river widens, the reed beds thicken, the landscape turns aquatic. You arrive at Venice's northern lagoon — the one tourists never see: mudflats, thatched fishing huts, silence. From here you can continue toward Jesolo or Caposile, or take the train back to Treviso.
The route suits everyone, including children and occasional cyclists. The gradient is zero, the surface asphalt or compacted gravel, refreshment stops plentiful. You can do it in half a day without hurrying, or a full day with breaks for lunch and a swim in the river where permitted.
The best season is spring and early autumn. In summer the route is pleasant but can grow busy on weekends. In winter, low-lying fog transforms the Sile into a Gothic novel setting — beautiful for those who love atmosphere.
The Sile Greenway proves you don't need mountains or dramatic scenery for a memorable cycling route. Sometimes all it takes is a slow river, a little silence and the freedom to pedal without a fixed destination.
