Castel del Giudice: The Village That Saved Itself by Planting Heritage Apple Trees
At 800 metres, Castel del Giudice was on the brink of depopulation. Today it has 40 hectares of organic orchards, 60 varieties of forgotten apples, and a scattered hotel with Michelin-recognised cuisine.
Twenty years ago Castel del Giudice, with 312 inhabitants on the upper Molisan Apennines at the border with Abruzzo, was one of those villages that empties slowly and silently, until only the elderly and the shuttered houses remain. Then someone had a simple, radical idea: plant fruit trees on the abandoned land. Today that village has become an international case study on the rebirth of small Italian towns.
Sixty apple varieties to save
The Melise project has recovered and planted over 40 hectares of organic apple orchards, putting in the ground up to sixty heritage apple varieties at risk of disappearing: the Limoncella, the Zitella, the Gelata, the Ruggine. The heritage apple orchard is now open to visitors and tells the story of the Apennines' agricultural biodiversity as no museum could. Alongside the orchards, thirty local beekeepers manage a community apiary — launched with Legambiente — and Malto Lento produces the first artisanal farm beer of upper Molise, brewed with locally grown barley.
Borgotufi: the scattered hotel among stone houses
The most surprising accommodation is Borgotufi, a scattered hotel created by restoring the village's old stone houses: rooms are spread across several buildings in the historic centre, connected by stone lanes. The restaurant, which has earned Michelin recognition, brings local products to the table in a contemporary key: apples, honey, raw-milk cheeses, lamb from the surrounding mountains. It is not cheap, but it is one of the few places in Molise where luxury tastes like authenticity.
How to get there and what to expect
Castel del Giudice is reachable in about two hours from both Naples and Rome, via Castel di Sangro. The final stretch of road is narrow and scenic. There is no bar on every corner, no souvenir shops: there is the mountain, the silence, the scent of apples in September, and an air quality you cannot find elsewhere. The best time to visit is autumn, during the apple harvest, or spring, when the orchards are in bloom.
