The Petriolo springs are a sulphurous source that emerges at 43 degrees into the bed of the Farma river, deep in the Maremma of Grosseto. Unlike the famous spas — Saturnia, San Casciano, Montecatini — there is no establishment here, no ticket, no sunbed. There is only the river, the rock, the warm water and the sky.

You reach them along a dirt track that descends from the provincial road between Monticiano and Civitella Paganico. After ten minutes of walking through the woods you arrive at the Farma river, where the thermal water mingles with the cold water of the stream, creating natural pools at different temperatures. You choose the right pool — scalding, warm or cold — and lower yourself in, the rocky banks serving as natural seats.

The water is rich in sulphur and you can smell it, though the scent fades after the first few minutes. The properties are those classic to sulphurous waters: beneficial for the skin, the joints and the respiratory tract. But the real benefit is the setting: you lie immersed in warm water with the forest all around, the sound of the river, the stars above if you come at sunset.

Petriolo has an ancient history: the Romans built monumental baths here, and the remains are still visible on the riverbank — brick walls, stone basins. The Sienese frequented them in the Middle Ages, and Lorenzo the Magnificent came here for cures and pleasure. Today they are free and open to everyone, 365 days a year.

The best time is autumn and winter: the contrast between cold air and warm water is the height of pleasure, and you are almost always alone. In summer the springs are busier but still perfectly enjoyable. Bring a towel, something to drink, and shoes you don't mind getting wet.

Petriolo is the kind of experience that changes your relationship with travel: there is nothing to book, nothing to pay, nothing to organise. You arrive, you undress, you immerse yourself. Nature does the rest.
