There are villages that ask nothing of being visited, and Mombaldone is one of them. Perched on a rise above the river Bormida, at the far south of the province of Asti, it is a medieval core of a few hundred inhabitants where the houses are built from the local grey sandstone, the same stone that colours the lanes, the arches and the walls. You enter on foot through what was once the gate of the fortified village, and within a few steps you find yourself in a silent maze where the loudest sound is that of your own footsteps.
The stone village
Here you will find no queues, tour buses or restaurants vying for customers. Mombaldone is counted among the most distinctive villages of the area precisely for its preserved medieval layout: the wall-houses that formed the defensive perimeter, the parish church, the remains of fortified structures that recall when this was a control point on the road between Piedmont and Liguria. It is a place to cross slowly, without a plan, letting the details guide you: a stone portal, a walled-up window, the sudden glimpse of the valley.
The Bormida Valley
Around it opens the Bormida Valley, a borderland between the Langhe and the Apennines, made of woods, vineyards and badland gullies. It is authentic, little-trodden countryside, ideal for those seeking quiet walks, back roads to travel without haste and genuine produce in the trattorias of the nearby villages. Far from the more famous and crowded Langhe of Alba and Barolo, here you breathe a rougher, more honest atmosphere.
When to go
Visit Mombaldone in spring or early autumn, when the light is soft and the heat does not weigh on you. Arrive without expectations and at a slow pace: that is how this stone village lets itself be known.
