Fabbriche di Careggine: The Medieval Village That Resurfaces When the Lake Drops

A medieval village submerged beneath the artificial Lago di Vagli in Garfagnana: it re-emerges at each draining, the last one awaited for decades.

Fabbriche di Careggine is a medieval borgo submerged beneath the waters of Lago di Vagli, an artificial reservoir created in 1946 to power a hydroelectric plant in the Garfagnana, in the province of Lucca. When the lake was filled, the village disappeared under the water — houses, church, cemetery, mill, everything.

But the water is not permanent. The lake is drained periodically for dam maintenance, and when it is, the borgo re-emerges intact: the stone walls, the collapsed roofs, the church with its bell tower, the cobbled streets. The last draining was in 1994, when hundreds of thousands of people came to watch the ghost village reappear from the lake bed.

Since then the lake has never been fully drained again, and Fabbriche di Careggine has gone back under the water. But its story continues to fascinate: the submerged village is visible during periods of drought, when the lake level drops and the tallest structures surface like stone skeletons. In those moments you can make out the perimeter walls of the houses, the church bell tower, the foundations of the mill.

Even without a full draining, Lago di Vagli is worth the visit. It is set in a narrow valley in the Alpi Apuane, surrounded by mountains of white marble and chestnut forests. The village of Vagli Sotto on the shore is an authentic mountain borgo with a handful of inhabitants and a silence broken only by the wind and the sound of water.

Walks around the lake offer viewpoints over the area where the village lies submerged. With binoculars, in periods of low water, you can identify structures beneath the surface — a surreal and melancholy experience.

Vagli is reached from the Garfagnana, one of Tuscany's most hidden valleys. The best time is summer and early autumn, when the lake level is lower. But the real attraction is the waiting: the next draining is periodically announced and periodically postponed, and Fabbriche di Careggine remains suspended between the lake bottom and the surface, between memory and promise.

It is a place you do not visit — you imagine. And imagining a village beneath the water is perhaps more powerful than seeing it.
