In the district of Heliopolis, in the north-east of Cairo, on Al-Ahram Square rises a dome that seems out of place: neither minaret nor Gothic bell tower, but a silhouette that recalls Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. It is the Co-Cathedral of Our Lady of Heliopolis, which everyone in Cairo simply calls "El Basilica". It was built between 1910 and 1913 at the wish of the Belgian baron Édouard Empain, the industrialist who designed Heliopolis as a garden city in the desert, connected to the centre by a tram line of his Cairo Electric Railways & Heliopolis Oasis Company.

The architect and the style

The building bears the signature of the French architect Alexandre Marcel, the same man who designed for Empain the famous Baron Palace in the Hindu style not far away. Here Marcel worked in a Byzantine key: Empain literally asked him to recreate a Hagia Sophia, and the Istanbul model was reproduced at a reduced scale of about a quarter. The reduction changes the proportions and the effect is that of a large but intimate church, with the central dome dominating the interior. The basilica was consecrated in 1913 under the name of Notre-Dame de Tongres, after the Belgian church where Empain had served as an altar boy in his childhood. Since 1914 it has held a pipe organ, still today the musical heart of the building, with over 1,400 pipes.

The baron's crypt

The reason this church tells the story of the cosmopolitan Cairo of the early twentieth century lies beneath the visitors' feet: in the crypt is buried the baron himself, Empain, who died in 1929, together with members of his family. In March 1930 King Leopold III and Queen Astrid of Belgium descended into the crypt to pay their respects. Heliopolis was born as a European and well-to-do enclave, with Art Nouveau villas, Moorish arches and wide tree-lined boulevards: the basilica was its Latin Catholic point of reference, and it became the co-cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate of Alexandria in Egypt in 2008.

The Heliopolis district

Walking through the surrounding area you understand why the detour is worth it. The avenues around Al-Ahram Street preserve many buildings from the Empain era, with the characteristic "Heliopolitan" style made of arcades, balconies and neo-Moorish details. Those who visit Cairo tend to concentrate on the Mamluk mosques of the historic Islamic centre and on the pyramids; Heliopolis remains a different chapter, the colonial and secular one, and precisely for this reason it is less trodden by the tours. A few minutes away is also the Baron Palace, restored and open as a museum, which together with the basilica makes up a small itinerary on the Heliopolis of the early twentieth century.

An important practical note: in 2022 a portion of the façade collapsed and the building, never given a complete restoration in over a century, has been undergoing consolidation works. It is therefore best to check its opening status beforehand. The church is generally accessible to the public but the hours are not fixed: the safest way is to contact the parish, which has an official website (labasilique.org) with the times of the Sunday Masses. Access to the crypt is not free and requires prior permission from the basilica council, so it must be requested in advance.

How to get there

To get there: the basilica is in the Almazah area, on Al-Ahram, reachable from the centre by metro (line 3, Heliopolis stations) or by taxi; asking for "El Basilica" is generally enough. The most pleasant months for strolling among the district's avenues are the cool ones, from October to April, avoiding Cairo's summer heat.
