Gerace: a cathedral suspended between sky and sea

On the Ionian coast of Calabria, far from the well-trodden routes, a medieval borgo clings to a sandstone crag dominating the valley of the Torrente Novito. Gerace is one of those places where time has stood still: a few hundred inhabitants, a handful of extraordinary churches, and panoramas that sweep all the way to the Ionian. Its Norman cathedral, consecrated in 1045, is the largest in all of southern Italy — a fact that surprises anyone arriving here for the first time.

What to see in Gerace

The Cathedral of the Assumption

Three naves divided by twenty spolia columns, taken from Magna Graecia temples and Roman villas of nearby Locri Epizefiri. The interior is vast, luminous, and solemn, with Corinthian and Ionic capitals that tell two thousand years of history at a single glance. The crypt, carved from living rock, preserves traces of Byzantine frescoes and an atmosphere of rare stillness. Do not miss the panoramic point from the churchyard: on clear days you can make out Etna beyond the Strait.

The minor churches and the historic centre

Gerace once boasted one hundred and twenty churches. Today around twenty remain, but some are genuine gems. The church of San Francesco d'Assisi, with its Gothic portal and altar inlaid with polychrome marbles, merits a prolonged visit. The small Byzantine church of San Giovannello, intimate and ancient, is among the oldest in Calabria. Lose yourself in the alleys of the Borghetto quarter, where stone houses display carved portals and biforate windows that recall the Norman and Swabian Gerace.

The Castle and the crag

At the top of the crag stand the remains of the Norman castle, today reduced to a few walls but surrounded by a spectacular panorama. The walk from the Piazza del Tocco to the castle is a gradual climb through walled kitchen gardens, prickly pears, and the scent of wild oregano. From here the strategic position of Gerace becomes clear: an impregnable eagle's nest that resisted Saracens, Byzantines, and earthquakes alike.

What to eat

Geracese cuisine is that of the peasant Locride, revisited with pride. Look for:

- Maccarruni — fresh handmade pasta with goat or pork sauce, the Sunday dish

- Stocco e patate — stockfish slow-cooked with potatoes, olives, and capers: a legacy of trade with northern Europe

- Pitta 'mpigliata — a spiral Christmas pastry filled with walnuts, raisins, and honey, widespread throughout the Locride

- Greco di Bianco DOC wine — the passito produced a few kilometres to the south, from Greco grapes grown on pergolas along the coast

A trattoria to try is the one near the Piazza del Tocco, where dishes follow the seasons and prices remain modest.

Getting there

Gerace is about 100 km from Reggio Calabria. It is reached by car along the SS106 Jonica to Locri, then climbing a scenic road of about 10 km. The nearest railway station is Locri, on the Ionian line, connected to Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro Lido. Local buses run from Locri to Gerace, but timetables are limited: a car is recommended. The nearest airport is Reggio Calabria Tito Minniti, about an hour and a half away by road.

When to go

Gerace is enjoyable year-round, but the ideal months are April to June and September to October, when the climate is mild and the alleys are practically deserted. In summer temperatures can exceed 35 degrees, but evenings on the belvedere bring pleasant breezes. In August the feast of the Madonna del Mastro is held with an evocative procession. Winter is quiet and never truly cold: perfect for visiting the cathedral without other tourists.

In the vicinity

Just 15 minutes away lies the archaeological park of Locri Epizefiri, one of the most important Greek colonies of Magna Graecia, with the temple of Marasà and the museum. The Ionian coast offers quiet beaches between Siderno and Roccella Ionica. For borgo lovers, Stilo with its Byzantine Cattolica is reachable in under an hour.
