A village on the edge of time

Viscri is the kind of place you discover by chance, or through a slow and stubborn word of mouth. Sixty houses along an unpaved road, a 12th-century fortified church on the hillside, hens crossing the path, not a single souvenir shop. When Prince Charles of England bought a house here in 2006, it was no whim: he wanted to save a world that was disappearing. That world is still here, and visiting it is a privilege.

What to see in Viscri

The fortified church

The Fortified Church of Viscri, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, is the village's heart. Built in the 12th century by the Saxon community, it was later enclosed by defensive walls with towers and bastions where inhabitants could take shelter during Ottoman and Tatar raids. Inside, the Lutheran austerity is moving: white walls, dark wooden pews, an 18th-century organ. The bell tower offers a 360-degree view over the rolling hills of Transylvania — a landscape with no equivalent in Western Europe.

The Saxon houses

The village homes, with their colored facades and solid wooden gates, are small works of vernacular architecture. Many have been carefully restored using original materials — lime, local stone, oak beams. Some house rural guesthouses (case de oaspeți) where you sleep under hand-woven blankets and dine on produce from the kitchen garden. The house bought by Prince Charles, at number 163, is open to visitors by appointment and occasionally hosts cultural events.

Local crafts

The women of Viscri have revived the tradition of felt-making and knitting, producing socks, slippers and blankets sold to visitors. The project, supported by a foundation linked to Prince Charles, has given the village a source of income compatible with its identity. In summer, it is possible to visit the small workshops and watch the production process.

What to eat

In Viscri you eat what the land provides, prepared as it was a hundred years ago:

- Zacuscă — a spread of roasted aubergines and peppers, preserved in jars, the condiment that accompanies every meal

- Tocană — pork or chicken stew with onion and paprika, served with steaming mămăligă

- Wood-fired bread — every guesthouse has its own, often made with caraway seeds

- Palincă — homemade plum brandy, offered as a welcome drink and digestif

There are no restaurants in the conventional sense: you eat at the guesthouses, booking dinner together with your room. Pensiunea Viscri 125 is one of the most appreciated.

How to get there

Viscri lies about 40 km from Sighișoara. There is no direct public transport: a car is essential. From Sighișoara, take the road toward Bunești, then turn off for Viscri — the last few kilometers are on an unpaved road, scenic and slightly bumpy. The most convenient airport is Târgu Mureș (90 km), followed by Sibiu (100 km). For those arriving by train, Sighișoara is the last station, from where you continue by taxi or rental car.

When to go

May and June are the most beautiful months: the meadows are in bloom, the days are long and temperatures are perfect for walking. September offers the warm colors of autumn and the harvest season. July and August are relatively busier — in relative terms, "busy" here means thirty visitors a day. Winter is harsh but evocative, with snow turning the village into a silent nativity scene.

A different pace

Viscri is not a place where you "do" much. It is a place to slow down, walk through the meadows, listen to silence, watch the sunset from the hill above the church. Those seeking attractions and entertainment will be disappointed. Those seeking authenticity will find one of the most genuine places in Europe.
