Entering Valsavarenche means leaving alpine tourism behind and finding yourself in a landscape that belongs more to animals than to humans. The valley winds into the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park from Villeneuve, on the Aosta Valley highway, and climbs to the foot of the Gran Paradiso glacier. The resident population in the valley's municipalities does not exceed a hundred in winter.

The Savoy Hunting Reserve Turned Natural Paradise

These valleys were purchased by the House of Savoy in 1856 as a private hunting reserve. The King brought his ibex hunting expeditions here, paradoxically contributing to the species' survival: without royal protection, the animal would have gone extinct. When Vittorio Emanuele III donated the reserves to the State in 1919, the park was born almost spontaneously. Today the valley preserves some of the royal hunting infrastructure: mule tracks, stone shelters, and army topographic signs.

The King's Trail and High-Altitude Refuges

The Sentiero del Re is a historic route that crosses the valley on ancient mule tracks. The Vittorio Emanuele II Refuge (2,732 m), reachable in about four hours from Pont, is the base camp for the Gran Paradiso ascent and offers incomparable views of the Alpine chain. Along the climb you encounter herds of male ibex with their crescent-shaped horns. In July, confirmed sightings exceed ten animals per day.

Getting There and Staying: Practical Tips

Pont, the valley's innermost hamlet at 1,960 meters, is reached in about 50 minutes from Aosta. Services are minimal: a small bar-grocery store and a few guesthouses. Local cuisine is best enjoyed in Aymavilles or Villeneuve, where Arnad DOP lard and alpine fontina appear on agriturismo tables. The best months are July and August for open trails, September for wildlife most visible in the morning hours.
