Valgrisenche: The Valley of Silence and Wind Among the Graian Alps
A side valley of the Aosta Valley almost devoid of tourism, with a stunningly blue artificial lake and a textile tradition that has survived the centuries.
Valgrisenche is probably the least-known valley in the Aosta Valley. No major ski resort, no railway, no international connection. Just a road climbing from Arvier — on the Aosta Valley highway — ascending for about thirty kilometers to the village capital at 1,664 meters, surrounded by peaks that brush four thousand meters.
The Artificial Lake and the Lunar Landscape
A few kilometers before the village, the Beauregard dam has created an artificial lake that on certain July days, with glacial meltwater, takes on an unreal turquoise color. The road along the lake can be traveled by car or bicycle and offers views of the vertical walls of the Graian Alps that would be the envy of far more celebrated alpine scenery. Access is free.
The Draps Textile Tradition
Valgrisenche preserves an ancient textile tradition: the draps, sheep-wool fabrics worked on manual looms, have been produced here since at least the medieval era. Some village families still produce draps using traditional techniques, and the fabrics — sturdy, warm, with simple geometric patterns — are sold in the village. Visiting one of the last active workshops is an experience worth the trip on its own.
Trails and High-Altitude Refuges
The trail climbing to the Bezzi Refuge (2,284 m) crosses pastures and alpine meadows with views of the Mont Blanc massif. Chamois are at home here. The refuge, open from mid-June to mid-September, serves traditional Valdostan dishes made with ingredients from surrounding alpine pastures. Prices are reasonable. The ideal season is July-August; in May-June the road may still be partially snow-covered in the upper sections.
