Pergine Valsugana has had the misfortune of sitting exactly halfway between Trento and the Veneto border, on a route that tourists travel without stopping. Yet it's Trentino's third-largest city by population, has a medieval castle commanding Lake Caldonazzo from 480 meters elevation, and an Austro-Hungarian historic center that in the autumn months, when light filters through the linden trees lining the main avenue, has a silent quality that's hard to find elsewhere.

Castel Pergine: the castle-hotel

Castel Pergine is one of Trentino's most unusual experiences: a thirteenth-century medieval castle, restored over the twentieth century, converted into a small hotel with eleven rooms of varying sizes and features. Sleeping within meter-thick walls with views of the lake and surrounding mountains costs between 100 and 150 euros per night for a double room — figures that at an equivalent property in Bolzano or Merano would be nearly double. The castle restaurant is also open to non-guests and serves Trentino dishes in a dining hall with exposed beams and a fireplace.

The historic center and the market

Pergine's historic center unfolds around Piazza Gavazzi and the adjacent streets: arcades, eighteenth-century palaces, and the Archpriest Church of San Carlo with a well-preserved baroque façade. The Friday morning market is one of the liveliest in the valley, with local products — malga cheeses, Valsugana fruit, chestnut honey — alongside clothing stalls. There's nothing folkloristic about it: it's a real market, attended by residents.

Lake Caldonazzo and the cycle path

Pergine is the starting point of the Valsugana cycle path, which follows the Brenta for about 100 kilometers to Bassano del Grappa through landscapes of varying but always interesting quality. The stretch from Pergine to Lake Caldonazzo is the shortest and most used: 5 kilometers of paved cycling path through gardens and woods. Bicycles can be rented in the center for about 15 euros per day.
