Trinidad de Cuba: The Sugar Town Where Time Stopped in 1850
Cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured colonial mansions, son music everywhere and the sugar valley: Trinidad is the Cuba tourism hasn't yet managed to change.

Trinidad was founded in 1514 and is one of Cuba's original seven cities. It grew enormously wealthy through sugar and slavery in the 18th and 19th centuries, then fell into a decline that — paradoxically — saved it. The cobblestone streets, the palaces with their wrought-iron grilles, the churches and squares remain exactly as the sugar barons left them.
The historic centre
Plaza Mayor is the heart of Trinidad: four palace-museums surround it, the yellow tower of the San Francisco convent presiding over all. The side streets rise and fall between single-storey houses painted yellow, sky-blue, pink and green, their wide-open doors revealing sitting rooms with tiled floors and rocking chairs. In the evenings, the Casa de la Música — an open-air staircase — fills with Cubans dancing salsa and son.
The Valle de los Ingenios
A few kilometres from Trinidad, the Valle de los Ingenios (a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the historic centre) is where sugar was produced. The Torre Manaca Iznaga — 44 metres tall, built in 1816 — was used to watch over enslaved workers in the plantations. Today it is a belvedere over the valley: sugar cane fields, mountains of the Sierra del Escambray and white clouds over an endless green.
Playa Ancón and the Sierra
Playa Ancón, 12 kilometres from the centre, is a white-sand Caribbean beach that remains relatively uncrowded. The Sierra del Escambray behind the city offers trekking through waterfalls (the Salto del Caburní is the most famous), bamboo forests and highland coffee plantations.
How to experience Trinidad
Sleeping in a casa particular (the Cuban version of a B&B) is an immersive local experience — the family cooks, shares stories, offers advice. The mojito at sunset on the rooftop of the Museo Romántico is a ritual. From Havana: Viazul bus (5.5 hours) or internal flight via Cienfuegos. Best time: November–April (dry season). Bring cash — credit cards work intermittently.
