The megalithic walls of Cefalù: the Temple of Diana on the Rocca

Above Cefalù, the Temple of Diana is a sanctuary of Cyclopean stone around an ancient cistern, ignored by those who crowd the cathedral.

Cefalù is one of the most reproduced postcards of Sicily: the Norman cathedral, the medieval wash-house, the beach that fills to bursting from June to September. Almost no one truly lifts their gaze towards the great limestone wall that looms over the town. And yet it is there, on the Rocca, that the oldest and most mysterious monument of the city hides.

The Temple of Diana

The Temple of Diana stands at about 150 metres above the sea, on the western flank of the promontory, along the path that climbs towards the summit of the Rocca. Do not expect columns and pediments: it is a construction of large polygonal blocks fitted together dry, a Cyclopean architecture that seems born from the rock itself. The oldest core is a cistern hewn into the stone and covered by great slabs resting on a lintel, a structure tied to the cult of water whose origins reach far back in time. Around and above it, in the following centuries, more imposing masonry was added.

The name "Temple of Diana" is in fact a popular tradition rather than an archaeological certainty: scholars speak cautiously of a sacred place linked to water, with no sure attribution of deity or precise dates. It is precisely this indeterminacy, far from the tidy explanatory reconstructions, that makes the climb so compelling. Along the way you also come across stretches of the megalithic walls that girdled the Rocca, enormous stacked stones looking out over the void.

The climb

The effort is modest but real: closed shoes, water and a hat are a must, because shade is scarce. From the top the eye takes in the rooftops of the old town, the cathedral seen from above and the coast stretching out towards the open sea. It is a viewpoint that repays every step, and one that most beach-goers never reach.

Tips for the visit

Climb early in the morning or in the late afternoon, avoiding the central hours and the peak of August. Stay on the paths, do not clamber over the ancient walls and carry away your rubbish: the Rocca is a protected and fragile area. Seen from up here, Cefalù becomes a little secret once more.
