Rocca Calascio, the Fortress Where Abruzzo Ends and the Sky Begins

At 1,460 metres in the Abruzzo Apennines, Rocca Calascio is among the highest fortresses in Italy: stone, wind and endless horizons.

There are places you don't visit: you reach them. Rocca Calascio is one of them. The fortress rises at around 1,460 metres above sea level, above the tiny village of Calascio, in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. To get there you leave the car behind and climb on foot along a path that crosses high-altitude meadows, until the limestone walls appear all at once, golden in the sun or wrapped in mist. This is not a castle built to impress tourists: it began as a watchtower and military outpost, and even today it seems made of wind and silence.

The landscape

From the top of its towers the gaze runs unhindered across the Campo Imperatore plateau, the Apennine steppe that many call "Little Tibet". Just below, isolated on a rocky spur, stands the octagonal little church of Santa Maria della Pietà, an image that alone is worth the journey. There are no crowded ticket offices here, no orderly queues: only the sound of your own footsteps and, at times, the distant bleating of a flock. The area has seen heavy depopulation, and it is precisely this abandonment that has preserved a landscape of rare authenticity.

When to go

To experience Rocca Calascio in its truest form, it's best to avoid summer Sundays and long weekends, when groups arrive drawn by the place's cinematic fame. Weekdays and the shoulder seasons are better: dawn and dusk offer a light that turns the stone to gold. Bring proper shoes, water and a windbreaker, because at altitude the weather changes quickly even in summer.

Visiting with respect

Visiting with respect means staying on the paths, leaving no trace and stopping for a coffee in the village: supporting those who still live in these places is the best way to keep them alive without wearing them out.
