Linha do Douro: The Portuguese Train That Glides Through the Port Wine Vineyards
From Porto to Pocinho along the Douro river, past vine terraces, granite quintas and azulejo-clad stations: the most beautiful rail journey on the Iberian Peninsula.
The Linha do Douro is one of Europe's most beautiful railways and one of the least known outside Portugal. It departs from Porto Campanhã — a station with azulejo-tiled façades depicting harvest scenes — and follows the Douro river for 215 kilometres to Pocinho, near the Spanish border. For the entire journey the train almost never strays from the water: the Douro flows always within sight, emerald green in summer, leaden grey in winter, with its slow bends and vine terraces climbing all the way to the horizon.
The most beautiful stretch: Régua–Pinhão
The whole line is remarkable, but the section between Peso da Régua and Pinhão — 25 kilometres — is what the Portuguese consider the heart of the Paese do Vinho do Porto. The train climbs through the schistous hills of the Douro Valley, a UNESCO site, past quintas where port wine and vinho verde have been produced for centuries. Pinhão station is a masterpiece: the azulejo panels decorating its walls depict scenes of rural life in the Douro and were made in 1937. It is worth stopping even just for fifteen minutes of contemplation.
Wine, bread and river fish
At Pinhão you eat lunch: the local cuisine serves bacalhau à Brás, patas de borrego (braised lamb shanks) and the rare peixe-do-rio — lamprey or Douro trout — with port wine paired with the main course as nowhere else in the world. The restaurants along the riverfront are inexpensive by European standards: a full meal with wine rarely exceeds 20 euros.
Timetables and trip combinations
Comboios de Portugal (CP) runs several daily services from Porto Campanhã. The Porto–Régua stretch takes about two hours; Régua–Pinhão another 40 minutes. The full run to Pocinho is less frequent and requires a change at Régua. The best months are September and October, during the vindima (grape harvest): the hillsides are alive with activity, tractors loaded with grapes block the village roads, and the air smells of fresh must. In spring the valley is covered in almond and vine blossom.
