Zambujeira do Mar: the wild beach Portugal keeps secret
Ochre cliffs on the Sudoeste Alentejano Natural Park, a beach that's still real, icy waters, and no concrete towers. The Algarve as it was twenty years ago.

Anyone arriving at Zambujeira do Mar from the Algarve — and few do — travels the reverse of mainstream Portuguese tourism logic. You leave behind the coast of resorts, cocktail bars, and plastic turtles in souvenir shops, and head north along the Costa Vicentina, where red-clay cliffs plunge into the Atlantic and the wind is the real thing, not the kind from poolside fans.
The beach and the cliffs
Zambujeira do Mar is a village of a few hundred souls clinging to a cliff in the heart of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, one of Europe's largest protected areas. The beach — fine sand, blue-green water, Blue Flag for years — is accessible only by descending a path through ochre cliffs and patches of cistus and lavender. There are no commercial parasols, no high-rises. There's the campsite bar and there's the sea.
The Costa Vicentina out of season
The Atlantic water here is cold even in summer — rarely exceeding 19 degrees — and the wind is constant: paradise for surfers, a challenge for beach readers. But it is precisely this harshness that keeps the masses away. Zambujeira is the ideal base for exploring the coast on foot along the Rota Vicentina, the hiking trail that covers 450 kilometres from Santiago do Cacém to Sagres: a walk among rocks, deserted beaches, and fishing villages where you can still eat freshly caught fish at honest prices.
Getting there and when to go
Zambujeira do Mar is about 220 kilometres from Lisbon and 100 from the Algarve. In summer, the small Sudoestfest festival brings a few thousand people in the first days of August, but shifting by just a few days restores the peace. June and September are the perfect months: the sun is out, the wind moderate, the beaches half-empty.
