Mértola on the Guadiana: Rome, Islam and the Alentejo in a single village

Perched above the river Guadiana, Mértola weaves together Roman, Islamic and Christian history in the deep Alentejo, amid stone, silence and golden light.

There are places in Portugal that mass tourism has learned to skip, and Mértola is one of them. Perched on a rocky spur where the river Guadiana meets the Oeiras stream, in the heart of the southern Alentejo, it is a maze of white houses, steep lanes and walls that slope down towards the water. Those who arrive here, often after long roads through bare hills and cork-oak groves, find a village that lives at its own pace, far from the din of Lisbon or the Algarve.

History in the stone

Mértola's history can be read in its stone. Already a river port in Roman times, it became an important centre during the Islamic rule of the Iberian peninsula, and of that past it preserves a rare trace: the parish church, built on a former mosque, still retains its floor plan and some of its original features, an almost unique case in Portugal. Above the village watches the medieval castle, from which the gaze embraces the river and the boundless countryside. The village is today a "vila museu", a scattered museum made up of small archaeological collections dotted among the streets.

The slow village

The beauty of Mértola is that it asks not to be consumed in haste. You walk aimlessly among the houses, you stop at a tavern for a plate of game or of Alentejo black pork, you go down to the bank of the Guadiana where the water flows slowly. In the surroundings stretches the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, a paradise for lovers of birdwatching and silent trails.

When to go

To truly enjoy it, it's best to avoid the summer heat, when the Alentejo becomes a furnace: spring and autumn bring soft light, green or golden hills and gentle temperatures. In Mértola you'll find no queues nor souvenirs at every corner, but something more precious: the time to look.
