Everyone in Bologna photographs the Two Towers and gets lost beneath the kilometres of porticoes. Few, though, slip into the sloping piazza of Santo Stefano, where a complex known as the "Seven Churches" gathers chapels, courtyards and cloisters layered over the centuries. When you cross the threshold, the noise of the city stays outside and you are greeted by red brick, low arches and a light that changes with every hour.

The hidden heart is the medieval cloister, on two tiers of columns, around a quiet courtyard. There are carved capitals, shady galleries, a well, and that sense of contemplation that monastic spaces still know how to give. No expensive tickets or queues are needed: you enter freely, on tiptoe, as you would enter a place that asks for respect more than admiration. Many visitors peer into the main church and leave again, never realising that behind the apses a whole world of passageways, small courtyards and silences opens up.

That's precisely the beauty of it: just metres from the busiest part of the centre, you can find yourself almost alone. Sit down on a step of the cloister, listen to the footsteps echoing, watch how the brickwork absorbs the light. It's a slow experience, one that rewards those in no hurry. Bring your discretion with you: it's a place of worship, and speaking quietly or turning off your flash is part of the right way to be there.

To avoid even the little crowding there is, choose the early morning or the late afternoon, away from the spring and summer weekends. The quietest months are the cold ones and the shoulder seasons, when Bologna breathes to its own rhythm and the cloister is almost entirely yours.
