The Mincio by bicycle: from the lake to the city of the Gonzaga

The Mincio is the only outflow of Lake Garda, a short and gentle river that descends in just 75 kilometres from Italy's largest lake to the Po. The cycleway that accompanies it, from Peschiera del Garda to Mantua, is a 45-kilometre route that seems designed for the pure pleasure of cycling: flat, immersed in nature, dotted with borghi and castles, and surprisingly uncrowded given that it connects two of northern Italy's most visited destinations.

The itinerary

Peschiera del Garda – Borghetto sul Mincio (10 km)

You set off from the Venetian fortress at Peschiera, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the Mincio emerges from the lake with crystalline waters. The cycleway runs along the right bank of the river through meadows and small woods. After just a few kilometres you arrive at Borghetto sul Mincio, one of the most beautiful borghi in Italy: a cluster of medieval houses built directly over the water, with watermills still in working order. The view from the Visconti Bridge, 650 metres long, is picture-postcard perfect.

Borghetto – Valeggio sul Mincio (3 km)

A short climb leads to Valeggio sul Mincio, a town famous across Italy for its tortellini di Valeggio (known as nodo d'amore, the love knot). The trattorias in the centre are a gastronomic experience not to be missed, and prices remain honest. The Parco Giardino Sigurtà, just outside the centre, is one of Europe's most beautiful gardens — 600,000 square metres of lawns, labyrinths and flowering plants.

Valeggio – Pozzolo and the moraine hills (12 km)

The route crosses the Garda moraine hills, gentle undulations left behind by the last glacier. You pedal through Custoza and Bardolino vineyards with views of the Alps on clear days. At Volta Mantovana you can visit the Palazzo Gonzaga and its cellars. The landscape is that of rural Italy that guidebooks never show: farmhouses, rows of vines, dogs dozing in doorways.

Pozzolo – Mantua (20 km)

The final stretch is the most naturalistic. You enter the Vallazza Nature Reserve, a protected wetland where herons, cormorants and the rare bittern nest. The river widens, the landscape becomes marshlike, and suddenly Mantua appears from the water like a mirage. The arrival in the city, skirting the artificial lakes created by the Gonzaga, is one of the most scenic finales of any Italian cycleway. The Palazzo Ducale, the Basilica di Sant'Andrea and the Rotonda di San Lorenzo await those with energy left for a visit.

Practical information

Difficulty

A very easy route, suitable for everyone including children and novice cyclists. Length 45 km, rideable in 3-4 hours with stops. Elevation change negligible (less than 100 metres). Surface almost entirely paved with short gravel sections. Good signage with information panels along the route.

When to go

The cycleway can be ridden year-round, but the best periods are spring (March-May) for the blossom and autumn (September-October) for the colours and mild temperatures. Summer is warm but the route is largely shaded. In winter the mists of the Po Valley create an almost mystical atmosphere.

How to organise the trip

The most practical approach is to start from Peschiera (reachable by train from Milan, Verona and Brescia) and arrive at Mantua, where you take the return train. Both stations accept bicycles. Several rental shops at Peschiera offer city bikes and e-bikes with drop-off at Mantua. The route also works as a there-and-back day trip.

What to bring

  • Binoculars for birdwatching in the Vallazza Reserve
  • Water bottle (fountains at Peschiera, Borghetto, Valeggio and along the route)
  • Sunscreen for the exposed sections
  • Lock for visiting the borghi
  • A good appetite: the gastronomic stops are an integral part of the journey

Where to eat

At Borghetto tortellini are served in restaurants facing the water. At Valeggio, Ristorante Gatto Moro is an institution for the nodi d'amore. Along the route you will find stalls with local products: honey, jams and Custoza wine. At Mantua the osterie in the centre serve pumpkin tortelli, risotto alla pilota and sbrisolona with zabaione.

Variants and detours

From Valeggio a 5 km detour leads to the Parco Giardino Sigurtà (paid entry, worth every cent). From Volta Mantovana you can climb into the moraine hills for views over Lake Garda. At Mantua the cycleway continues along the Po towards Ferrara (another 100 flat kilometres). Those with limited time can ride just the Peschiera-Borghetto-Valeggio stretch (13 km) as a half-day excursion from the Garda shore.

Rental and assistance

At Peschiera at least four rental shops offer touring bikes and e-bikes, some with Mantua drop-off included in the price. Cycle workshops at Peschiera, Valeggio and Mantua. The cycleway can also be ridden on bikes rented from the Verona and Mantua bike-sharing schemes, though check the return zones beforehand.

Why this cycleway is special

The Ciclovia del Mincio proves that you do not need hundreds of kilometres for a memorable experience. In half a day you move from a Venetian fortress to a medieval borgo on the water, cross a fairytale garden, pedal through rice paddies and marshlands, and arrive in one of Italy's most refined art cities. It is the quintessence of Italian cycle tourism: short, beautiful and delicious.
