Where Water Begins Its Journey

There are places you discover by following the water. Polcenigo is one of them: an ancient borgo nestled at the foot of the Carnian Pre-Alps, at the precise point where the waters of the Livenza well up from the rock and begin their long journey to the sea. It is a place of quiet, deep beauty, where the sound of flowing water accompanies every walk and every pause. A borgo that the Borghi più Belli d'Italia circuit has included in its list, yet one that remains miraculously uncrowded — perhaps because it lies far from the usual routes, perhaps because its beauty is not the kind that shouts.

Polcenigo stands in the foothills of Pordenone, in that corner of Friuli Venezia Giulia that for centuries was part of the Serenissima Republic and still bears its imprint in the palaces, the winged lions and the gentleness of the landscape. To arrive here means leaving the plain behind and ascending toward a world of wooded hills, green meadows and the special light of lands where water is everywhere.

The Springs: Santissima and Gorgazzo

The natural heart of Polcenigo is the Livenza springs, and in particular two places that are worth the journey on their own.

The Santissima Spring

The Santissima spring is a wide resurgence that wells up placidly in a green hollow at the foot of the borgo. The water, perfectly clear and constant throughout the year at a temperature of around ten degrees, surfaces among the meadows creating a small lake with emerald reflections. Beside it, the little church of the Santissima — from which it takes its name — watches discreetly from among the trees. The place has a natural sanctity you sense immediately: the silence, broken only by the gurgling of the water and birdsong, invites contemplation. A level path allows you to reach the spring from the village centre in just a few minutes.

The Gorgazzo Spring

More spectacular, and decidedly more enigmatic, is the Gorgazzo spring. Here the water emerges from a cavity in the rock, forming a small lake of an intense, almost unreal turquoise. The exact depth of the underwater cave is not yet fully known: speleodiving explorations have reached beyond eighty metres, but the siphon continues. The colour of the water varies with the seasons and rainfall, shifting from emerald green to cobalt blue, and on sunny days the reflections on the rock create hypnotic plays of light. A small park with benches and information panels surrounds the spring.

The Historic Borgo

The historic centre of Polcenigo climbs a glacial hill, with cobblestone lanes rising between stone houses hung with flowering balconies. At the top, the ruins of the Castle of the Counts of Polcenigo — a family that governed these lands for centuries — dominate the valley with their austere bulk. Of the castle there remain the perimeter walls, a tower and open spaces that on summer evenings host concerts and performances.

Descending, you pass through the main square with its sixteenth-century loggia and the municipal palace. The church of San Giacomo, with its slender bell tower, holds seventeenth-century paintings and an ancient organ. But the borgo's true charm lies above all in its atmosphere: cats on windowsills, laundry drying in the sun, the smell of woodsmoke and cut grass, the sound of water that never ceases.

Palù di Livenza: Prehistory in the Marshland

A few kilometres from the centre, the pile-dwelling site of Palù di Livenza has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. It is a prehistoric settlement dating from the Neolithic and Copper Ages, discovered in the wetlands fed by the springs. The site itself is not accessible — the excavations are protected — but a nature trail on wooden boardwalks crosses the surrounding peat bog, offering a rare landscape: reeds, water lilies, grey herons, dragonflies. It is a short but evocative excursion, ideal for the cool morning hours.

What to Eat

Polcenigo's cooking is the robust, flavoursome Friulian cuisine of the foothills. Frico — melted and crisped Montasio cheese served with polenta — is the emblematic dish. You will also find barley soup, cjarsons (sweet-savoury ravioli from the Carnian tradition), smoked speck and mountain cheeses. The wine is from the Colli Pordenonesi, little known but full of character: intense, full-bodied Merlot and Cabernet Franc reds, and a Prosecco from the hills of Treviso just a few kilometres away.

- Osteria al Castello: Friulian dishes on a terrace with valley views, frico and game in season

- Agriturismo alla Sorgente: home cooking with garden produce, Livenza trout

- Sagra dei Sest: in August, a village festival with food stalls, music and the entire borgo illuminated

Getting There and When to Go

Polcenigo is reached by car from the A28 motorway (exit Sacile Ovest or Conegliano), about twenty minutes from the motorway junction. The nearest railway station is Sacile, from where you continue by local bus or taxi. There is no frequent public service: a car is the most practical option.

Spring is the ideal time: the springs are at peak flow, the meadows flower, temperatures are perfect for walking. Autumn brings extraordinary colours to the pre-alpine woods and the borgo comes alive with the Sagra dei Sest. Summer is pleasant thanks to the cool air from the springs. Winter is the most intimate season, with the borgo almost deserted and the springs steaming in the cold air.

You don't visit Polcenigo — you inhabit it for a few hours, you listen to it, you breathe it in. It is a place that asks for slowness and repays you with a peace that is hard to find anywhere else. Bring comfortable shoes, a book and no hurry at all.
