Offida: The Town of Bobbin Lace and the Oldest Carnival in the Marche
Among Pecorino vineyards and honey-colored alleyways, Offida guards a millennial craft: tombolo bobbin lace, and a Carnival dating back to the Middle Ages.
There is a scent of grape must and fine thread in the air of Offida, a hilltop village perched on the last hills of the Piceno before the land descends toward the Adriatic. The old town gathers around a square that feels like a natural theater set: the Palazzo Comunale with its civic tower, the Collegiata di Santa Maria della Rocca suspended on the edge of the hill, and all around the industrious silence of houses from which the clicking of bobbins on the tombolo cushion filters through.
Tombolo Bobbin Lace, a Living Heritage
Offida's tombolo lace is recognized by UNESCO as intangible heritage: the village women, especially the eldest, still work on round cushions fixed to a low stand, moving dozens of thread bobbins with hypnotic speed. The Tombolo Lace Museum in Piazza del Popolo displays works of extraordinary complexity: a square meter of tombolo requires hundreds of hours. Prices for handmade shawls and tablecloths start at 30-40 euros for the smallest pieces, while the most elaborate creations can exceed a thousand.
The Historic Carnival: Fake Bulls and Grotesque Masks
In February, Offida transforms. Its Carnival is one of the oldest in the Marche: the Vlurd — bundles of burning reeds — are carried in nocturnal procession through the town center amid shouts and dialect songs. On Shrove Tuesday, the Bovi Finti — men disguised as oxen pulling a cart — traverse the town in an agrarian pantomime of medieval origins. No modern floats, no amplifiers: just the archaic ritual of a town that remembers being peasant.
Wine and Piceno Cuisine
Offida is also one of the cradles of Pecorino DOC, an indigenous grape variety producing mineral and fragrant whites, ideal with olive ascolane (here also prepared in a sweet version, with meat and chocolate). The old-town cellars, like those in surrounding farmhouses, welcome visitors with almost no advance notice. A tasting of three wines with a cheese and cured-meat board costs around 12-15 euros. The Osteria Ophis restaurant offers traditional dishes like vincisgrassi and freshwater fish brodetto.
How to Get There and When
Offida is about 30 kilometers from Ascoli Piceno, reachable in under half an hour by car. There is no direct rail link: the best option is a bus from San Benedetto del Tronto station. The best time is spring (April-May) for the flowering landscape and the autumn grape harvest in September, but the February Carnival is an unrepeatable experience. Offida is not yet on the mass-tourism radar: B&Bs in the center cost between 50 and 70 euros per night.
