Monte Castello di Vibio: Ninety-Nine Seats for the World's Smallest Theatre

Atop an Umbrian hill overlooking the Tiber, nine families built a ninety-nine-seat baroque jewel in 1808. It is still in operation.

There is a place in Umbria where the curtain rises for an audience of ninety-nine, and even that small crowd seems excessive for the space. Monte Castello di Vibio is a heart-shaped village — aerial photographs confirm it — perched at 422 metres between Todi and the Tiber, concealing in its historic centre the Teatro della Concordia, officially the world's smallest theatre.

Nine families, a dream of harmony

In 1808, in the full flush of post-revolutionary idealism, nine wealthy families of the village joined forces to build a place where they could gather, debate, and watch performances. The name they chose — Concordia — was both aspiration and political manifesto. The interior reproduces Italian theatrical architecture in miniature: orchestra pit, boxes decorated with frescoes by Cesare Agretti and his son, a stalls area with wooden chairs, foyer, box office, and dressing rooms. All in roughly 70 square metres. It is the only theatre in the world with fewer than one hundred seats that faithfully replicates, on a small scale, the structure of the great Italian theatres.

The village from above

Strolling through Monte Castello di Vibio is an experience worth having regardless of the theatre. The village is part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy network and is recognised as a Slow City. From the viewpoint — reachable on foot in a few minutes from the car park — the Tiber valley wraps around the hills like a silver ribbon, with Todi in the distance and the Umbrian Apennine hills closing off the horizon.

When to visit and prices

The theatre is open for visits almost year-round, with guided tours to be booked in advance (tickets around 5 euros). Spring and autumn offer the best landscape and occasional performances on the programme. The village is about 40 kilometres from Todi and has no railway station — a car is needed. In summer the village hosts the summer theatre season, when the ninety-nine seats fill with an audience from all over Italy.

Where to eat

Local cuisine revolves around extra-virgin olive oil from the Tiber hills — among the finest in Umbria — and pigeon, a regional speciality. A couple of trattorias in the historic centre serve set menus at moderate prices, with a view over the valley that alone is worth the trip.
