Macereto, the Renaissance temple at a thousand metres in the Sibillini Mountains

At a thousand metres in the Sibillini Mountains, on a plateau of grass and wind, the Renaissance temple of Macereto in white travertine awaits a handful of travellers.

You arrive at the Sanctuary of Macereto almost by chance, climbing up from Visso along a road that winds through pastures to an altitude of a thousand metres. Then the plateau suddenly opens out and there it is: an octagonal mass of pale travertine, severe and luminous, planted in the greenery as if someone had set a Renaissance jewel in the middle of the mountains. The first reaction is astonishment: what is such a refined building doing in so remote a place?

The answer lies in an old legend. It is said that in the mid-fourteenth century a mule carrying an image of the Madonna knelt here and refused to go any further. Where the original shrine stood, in the sixteenth century the community of Visso decided to build a sanctuary worthy of that wonder. Work began around 1528 and dragged on for decades, giving shape to one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in the Marche, declared a national monument in 1902.

Inside, the light filters calmly onto the central plan and onto the little temple that guards the ancient image, inspired by the Holy House of Loreto. Do not expect crowds or queues: often you find yourself alone, with the sound of the wind coming through the doors and the odd pilgrim lost in contemplation. Around the main building run the lower wings of the complex, once meant to shelter travellers and merchants who climbed all the way up here.

But it is outside that Macereto is at its best. The plateau is a sea of grass where horses and flocks graze, with the profiles of the Sibillini as a backdrop. You walk, you breathe, you look into the distance. It is a place that calls for slowness, not the frenzy of postcard destinations.

To visit it with respect, choose weekdays, take your rubbish away with you and remember that it remains a place of worship. Getting there takes a bit of road, but that is exactly what keeps it intact. Macereto is not a place to tick off in a hurry: it is a silence to be earned.

Getting there

The Sanctuary of Macereto stands on a plateau at about a thousand metres in the Sibillini Mountains, in the municipality of Visso, and is reached by car along mountain roads with hairpin bends. From Visso you climb following the signs for Macereto, while those coming from Camerino pass through Muccia and Fiordimonte; from the A14 motorway you exit at Civitanova Marche and continue inland via Polverina and Fiastra. There are no direct public transport links to the sanctuary, so the car is the most practical solution.
