Where to stay in Grosseto: neighbourhoods and practical tips

Grosseto is the gateway to the Maremma: where to stay between the walled old town and easy access to the sea and the Maremma Regional Park.

Grosseto is often just a stopover on the way to the sea or the Maremma Regional Park, but its historic centre — entirely enclosed within the 16th-century Medicean walls commissioned by Francesco I and designed by Baldassarre Lanci — deserves a proper stay. Sleeping within the walls means having Piazza Duomo, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Renaissance bastions just steps away, and getting around entirely on foot: the centre is largely pedestrian or traffic-limited.

Travellers with a car who want easier parking will find good alternatives just outside the walls, near the station or along the ring boulevards, a few minutes' walk from the centre. If the goal is to combine city and sea, it's worth looking instead towards the coastal hamlets of Marina di Grosseto or Principina a Mare, both a 15-20 minute drive from the city and handy as a base for the Maremma park.

Grosseto isn't a destination with a huge number of places to stay: choice is more limited than in Florence or Siena, so in high season (especially summer, given the proximity to the sea) it's worth booking somewhat in advance.
