Day 1 — historic centre and the Malaspina fortress
The day starts at Piazza Aranci, one of the area's most scenic squares thanks to the façade of Palazzo Ducale, and continues to Piazza Mercurio with its 16th-century fountain dedicated to the god Mercury. From here you climb towards the Malaspina fortress: a fortification rooted in a tower from the year 1000, expanded over the centuries by the Cybo-Malaspina family with Renaissance and Baroque elements. The climb to the fortress also rewards with a view over the town and, on clear days, the Apuan Alps behind it.
Day 2 — marble quarries and the Apuan Alps
Massa lies at the western foot of the Apuan Alps, just a few kilometres from the white marble quarries that made the whole area famous (shared with neighbouring Carrara). The second day is a chance to venture into the mountain hamlets — Antona, Resceto, Pariana — starting points for those who want to hike the Apuan trails, or for a gentler drive through quarry landscapes and mountain villages, just minutes from the sea but with a completely different atmosphere.
