Pistoia sits on the railway line connecting Florence to Lucca and Viareggio, with frequent regional trains from both directions: from Florence the journey takes under an hour, making Pistoia a convenient day trip for those staying in the Tuscan capital. The station is a few minutes' walk from the historic centre.

By car, Pistoia is reached via the A11 Florence-Sea motorway, with a dedicated exit, or via the state road connecting it to Lucca through the Val di Nievole.

With no airport of its own, the most practical option is Florence Airport (Peretola/Vespucci), about 40 minutes away by car or by train with a change; Pisa Airport is a good alternative for those already planning to visit the Tuscan coast.
