There are places that guard masterpieces without advertising them, and Castelseprio is one of them. About forty minutes by car from Varese, immersed in a chestnut wood, lies the archaeological park of an ancient castrum: crumbling walls, the foundations of towers, the silence broken only by the wind among the trees. Few know that right here, outside the gates of the settlement, hides one of the greatest surprises of Italian medieval art.

The Frescoes

The church of Santa Maria foris portas is a modest building: a small trilobate plan, rough stone, nothing showy from the outside. But inside, the apse preserves a cycle of frescoes dedicated to the infancy of Christ that scholars consider among the most important examples of early medieval mural painting in Europe. The scenes, drawing also on the apocryphal gospels, have a surprising grace and liveliness, of clear Byzantine derivation.

Author and Dating

The debate over the author and the dating is still open. The frescoes are variously placed between the sixth and the tenth century, the work of an anonymous master of Eastern training whom tradition calls "the Master of Castelseprio". A graffito citing an archbishop of Milan who lived in the first half of the tenth century leans toward a date earlier than that period, but the hypotheses remain diverse. This uncertainty, far from diminishing its allure, only heightens it.

Since 2011 the site has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing "Longobards in Italy: Places of the Power", together with six other sites across the peninsula. And yet it remains little visited: no queues, no crowded ticket offices, often just you and the custodian. It's worth combining the visit with the nearby monastery of Torba, a short distance away, to complete the picture of this forgotten corner.

When to Go

Go on weekdays, checking the opening hours beforehand, as they are limited. Spring and autumn give the wood its finest colours and ideal temperatures for walking among the ruins. Bring comfortable shoes, respect the silence of the church and leave everything as you found it: it is precisely its quiet that makes Castelseprio a treasure to be safeguarded.
