Butrint, the city of stone sleeping among Albania's waters
Between a lagoon and a channel in southern Albania, the layered ruins of Butrint hold millennia of history in a rare stillness.

A few kilometres from Saranda, where the Albanian coast faces Corfu across the water, Butrint announces itself without fanfare. You reach it skirting the Vivari channel, through a landscape of brackish waters, reed beds and wooded hills. The archaeological site, protected as a National Park and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is often reached by a small cable ferry that crosses the channel: a detail that already slows the pace and prepares you for the encounter.
What makes Butrint special is its layering. Here you walk among Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman remains, superimposed over the centuries on a single tongue of land. You cross an ancient theatre set into the greenery, the ruins of an early Christian baptistery, city walls and a fortress that dominates from above. The vegetation has reclaimed much of the stone, so that the ruins seem to emerge from the woods rather than impose themselves upon it. It is a place where nature and archaeology coexist without rigid fences.
Unlike the great archaeological parks of the Mediterranean, Butrint remains surprisingly quiet. You can walk entire trails almost in solitude, hearing only the rustle of the reeds and the call of the lagoon's birds. There are no queues, no dense crowds to sidestep for a photo. For anyone seeking an authentic alternative to the more crowded sites of Greece or Italy, it is a revelation.
The advice is to avoid the heart of summer, when Saranda fills with beach tourists, and to choose spring or autumn. The light is softer, the temperatures mild, and the paths among the ruins give back that sense of solitary discovery which is the true luxury of travel today. Bring water, comfortable shoes and time: Butrint reveals itself only to those who know how to stop.
Getting there
The site lies just south of Saranda, on the Albanian Ionian coast. The most convenient reference airport is Corfu, in Greece, from where you reach Saranda by the ferry that connects the island to the town. From Saranda you continue by car along the coastal road or by the local bus that runs all the way to the entrance of the archaeological park.
