Apice Vecchia: The Town That Froze on the Day of the 1962 Earthquake

An Irpinian borgo abandoned after the 1962 earthquake: furnished houses, rusted shop signs, a clock stopped on a time that no longer moves.

Apice Vecchia is a borgo in Irpinia, in the province of Benevento, abandoned after the 1962 earthquake. The inhabitants moved to the new village a few kilometres away, and the old centre was left as it was: houses with furniture still inside, shops with rusted signs, a pharmacy with its bottles still on the shelves.

You arrive along a road that climbs from the Calore valley floor, and the impact is immediate: an entire town, with its streets, its squares, its churches, completely empty. It is not a ruin — the buildings are largely intact, with their roofs, doors and windows. It is a kind of Pompeii of the twentieth century, where the earthquake played the role of Vesuvius.

You walk through the deserted streets with the sensation of intruding on someone's privacy. The houses still have curtains at the windows, tiles in the kitchen, sinks in place. The cinema still has the poster of the last film screened. The barber's still has the mirror on the wall. Time stopped on a precise date — 21 August 1962 — and since then no one has touched anything.

The main church is the most moving part: the interior is intact, with faded frescoes and wooden pews still in their places. Light enters through the broken windows and illuminates the floating dust. It is a place that commands silence and respect.

In recent years the municipality of Apice has begun a restoration project: some structures have been made safe, pedestrian routes signposted, guided visits organised at certain periods. But the fascination of the place lies in its incompleteness: it is not a museum, it is a place suspended in time.

It can be visited in a couple of hours. The best time is spring and autumn, when the light is soft and the heat is not oppressive. It pairs well with a visit to inland Irpinia, a land of excellent wines and little-known borghi.

Apice Vecchia is a reminder of how fragile inhabiting a place really is. An entire town, with its daily life, can be erased in a matter of seconds. And what remains is not rubble — it is the objects of everyday life, still in their places, waiting for hands that will never return.
