The Pesaro Apennines are not a territory spontaneously associated with craft beer, yet Apecchio — a village of around 1,700 inhabitants in the upper Bosso Valley — has been home since 1996 to one of the oldest craft breweries in the Marche. Birra di Apecchio, founded when the Italian craft beer movement was still in its infancy, produces labels that have earned national distribution and recognition at major European competitions. But Apecchio is far more than this single element: it is a compact medieval village with a ducal palace and civic tower, immersed in prime truffle-hunting territory.

The Brewery and the Beers

The Apecchio brewery is located in the centre of town and welcomes visitors for tastings and tours, preferably by appointment. The main line includes a blonde, a red and a dark ale brewed with Apennine spring water; seasonal editions include a white truffle beer — a local product — that sounds provocative but turns out surprisingly balanced. A tasting of four beers with a local appetiser costs around 12 euros; take-away bottles start at 4–5 euros for standard sizes.

Truffles and Forests

The Apecchio area is one of the main harvesting grounds for prized white truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico) in the Marche. The main season runs from October to January, with the best days concentrated between November and December. Local truffle hunters head out at dawn with their trained dogs; the Apecchio truffle market, smaller than the one in Acqualagna but more authentic in character, takes place on Sundays during the harvest period. The surrounding oak, downy oak and hornbeam woods are also rich in porcini mushrooms between August and October.

The Medieval Village

Apecchio's old town is built around the fifteenth-century ducal palace of the Ubaldini family: it is not open inside but the facade and courtyard are accessible. The civic tower is the village's vantage point, with views over the upper Bosso Valley and the surrounding forests. The church of Sant'Agostino houses an eighteenth-century organ and several paintings from the Marche school. The village is alive and lacks the museum-like quality of certain villages restored for tourism: there is a working bakery, a bar, a small butcher's shop.

How to Get There and Travel Pairings

Apecchio is about 50 kilometres from Urbino and 60 from Pesaro, making it reachable in an hour's drive from the coast. The road climbing from the A14 motorway (Fano exit) crosses beautiful hills and forest scenery. Recommended pairing: Apecchio + Piobbico (with the Brancaleoni castle and the famous "Club of the Ugly") + the Furlo Gorge, for a hinterland Pesaro itinerary that no mainstream guide covers.
