A twelfth-century Cistercian abbey set in the Piedmontese plain, Staffarda is one of the best-preserved monastic complexes in Italy.

The Piedmontese plain south of Saluzzo does not invite you to stop. Rice paddies, poplars and rows of maize follow one another for kilometres in an agricultural landscape that seems to refuse tourism. Then, suddenly, Staffarda Abbey appears: a twelfth-century Cistercian complex rising among the fields like a mirage of grey stone, almost unchanged in its eight centuries of existence.

Cistercian Architecture on the Plain

Founded in 1135 by the Cistercian order on a donation from the Marquises of Saluzzo, Staffarda is one of the most intact examples of Romanesque-Cistercian architecture in northern Italy. The abbey church, the chapter house, the cloister and the refectory form an ensemble in which Benedictine austerity can still be read in the proportions of the spaces and the quality of the light. The Gothic portico added in the fourteenth century introduces a note of gentleness without betraying the spirit of the place.

The Agricultural Hamlet and the Market

Around the abbey lies a small farming hamlet that in past centuries depended economically on the monastery. Today it hosts a few artisan shops and a restaurant serving agnolotti del plin with butter and Langhe tonde gentili hazelnuts. The abbey is owned by the Ordine Mauriziano and open all year; admission is 4 euros. Guided tours are available at weekends by appointment.

How to Get There and When to Come

Staffarda is about 8 kilometres from Saluzzo and 15 from Racconigi. There is no direct public transport: it is reached by car along provincial road 23 toward Revello. The winter fog that wraps the surrounding fields adds an atmosphere that summer photographs cannot convey. Spring, when the poplars put on new leaves, is the gentlest season for visiting the complex.
