What to see in Favignana in 2 days: turquoise coves, tuna fishermen and the Mediterranean butterfly

Why visit Favignana in 2 days

Favignana, the "butterfly" of the Egadi islands thanks to its two-winged shape, is an island where time has stood still among disused tuna fisheries, tufa quarries turned into gardens and coves of impossible colour. Just 30 minutes by hydrofoil from Trapani, it offers Caribbean-like seas without flying to the other side of the world. Two days let you cycle around the island and discover every hidden corner.

Day 1: the town, the Florio factory and the eastern coves

Morning - The town and the Florio factory

Begin from the town centre, gathered around Piazza Madrice with its parish church and pedestrian streets lined with low tufa houses. The atmosphere is that of an island still living from fishing and farming.

The morning highlight is the former Florio tuna factory, an imposing 19th-century industrial building where bluefin tuna was processed. Today it is a museum telling the story of the mattanza, the ritual tuna hunt practised for centuries. The halls with their enormous anchors, nets and vintage film footage are a journey through time. Vincenzo Florio turned Favignana into a tuna empire and the factory is its monument.

Afternoon - Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra

By bicycle (the ideal way to get around on the flat eastern part of the island) reach Cala Rossa, ranked among Italy's most beautiful beaches. The water shifts from turquoise to cobalt between white tufa walls. The name comes from blood shed during the Punic Wars.

Continue to Cala Azzurra, more accessible and family-friendly, with a sandy bottom and shallow water. Along the way you will find the open-air tufa quarries, transformed into secret gardens: fig trees, bougainvillea and vegetable plots grow sheltered by the calcarenite walls.

Evening

Dine in town with fish couscous Trapani-style, tuna in all its preparations and a Grillo white wine. The restaurants overlooking the harbour are the most atmospheric.

Day 2: western side, Monte Santa Caterina and hidden coves

Morning - Cala Rotonda and Bue Marino

The western side is wilder and hillier. Reach Cala Rotonda, where a natural rock arch frames the sea. Bue Marino, slightly to the north, is a sea cave accessible by swimming, with crystal-clear water and light filtering through the vault.

Preveto beach, on the south-west side, is one of the least visited on the island: white pebbles, a pine grove and absolute silence.

Afternoon - Monte Santa Caterina and hidden gems

Climb (on foot or by bike with some effort) to the Fort of Santa Caterina on the top of the mountain (314 m). The Norman fortress, later reused as a Bourbon prison, is in an evocative state of abandonment. From the summit the panorama embraces all the Egadi islands, the Trapani coast and on clear days Tunisia.

On the way down, seek out the underground gardens: the ancient tufa quarries where islanders grow citrus and vegetables sheltered from the wind. These hidden plots are a unique peculiarity of Favignana, a heritage of farming ingenuity that deserves to be known.

If time allows, a boat tour of the island (about 3 hours) reaches sea caves and coves otherwise inaccessible.

Evening

Final sunset from the harbour pier, almond granita in hand. If the sea is calm, an evening swim at the Praia, the town beach, is the best way to bid the island farewell.
