Where to stay in Favignana: areas, accommodation and budget tips

Why choose Favignana

Favignana is the largest of the Egadi Islands, off Sicily's western coast. With turquoise waters reminiscent of the Caribbean, ancient tufa quarries transformed into secret gardens and a pace of life that invites you to slow down, it is one of Italy's most captivating islands. The mattanza tuna harvest, practised for centuries, has left a unique cultural legacy visible in the former Stabilimento Florio.

Staying overnight in Favignana, rather than taking a day trip from Trapani, lets you enjoy the deserted coves in the early morning and at sunset, when day visitors have gone and the island reveals its most authentic charm.

Best areas to stay

Village centre

Favignana's small centre clusters around Piazza Madrice and Piazza Europa, with the main church, cafés and shops. Most accommodation is concentrated here: B&Bs, small guesthouses and apartments. The position is convenient for reaching the port (ferries to Trapani and the other Egadi islands) and for accessing restaurants and bicycle hire. Prices start from 60-80 euros per night in high season.

Eastern area (Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra)

The island's eastern side hosts its most famous coves: Cala Rossa, rated among Italy's most beautiful beaches, and Cala Azzurra with its white sand. Holiday homes and villas close to the beaches are found here, reachable by bicycle from the centre. Prices are higher but convenience is considerable.

Western area (Cala Rotonda and Bue Marino)

The western side is wilder and less frequented. Open-air tufa quarries create moon-like landscapes of rare beauty. Lodgings here are few but evocative: country houses and small properties immersed in Mediterranean scrub. A bicycle is needed to get around, but the peace is absolute.

Southern area (Lido Burrone)

Lido Burrone is the island's only equipped beach, with fine sand and shallow water, ideal for families. The area has aparthotels and apartments with gardens, at more accessible prices than the eastern zone.

Types of accommodation

B&Bs and guesthouses

The most common offering in the centre. Well-kept rooms with breakfast of granita, brioche and cannoli, run by Favignana families who share stories of mattanza and the sea. Hospitality is warm and tips on hidden coves are priceless.

Holiday homes and apartments

The preferred option for families and groups. Many holiday homes have gardens with lemon trees and bougainvillea, and some occupy former tufa quarries converted with shaded internal courtyards. Cooking at home with fresh fish from the market is a pleasure.

Dammusi and tufa houses

Dammusi, traditional flat-roofed buildings made of tufa blocks, are Favignana's most distinctive lodging. Tastefully restored, they offer cool interiors even in midsummer thanks to their thick walls. A unique architectural experience.

Small hotels and aparthotels

Favignana has no large resorts, but small hotels and aparthotels with pools offering full services at reasonable prices. The compact size ensures personalised attention.

Unique and special stays

Favignana offers the chance to sleep inside former tufa quarries transformed into underground gardens, where fig trees grow sheltered by limestone walls and the temperature stays cool even in August. Some cave-houses preserve the stone-cutters' marks on their walls. For a special experience, look for properties with sea-view terraces in the Punta Ferro area, where the night sky is free of light pollution.

Practical budget tips

  • Avoid the first half of August: it is the most expensive and crowded period, with prices tripling compared to June
  • Book 3-4 months ahead for summer: supply is limited and sells out fast
  • Rent a bicycle instead of a scooter: the island is small and nearly flat, and bike hire costs a third
  • Shop at the fish market and cook at home: the saving on dining out is significant
  • Consider May, June and September: the sea is already splendid, coves are uncrowded and prices halved
  • Take the slow ferry rather than the hydrofoil from Trapani: the saving is significant and the crossing pleasant
  • Bring a mask and snorkel: snorkelling in the coves is free and spectacular

When to book

High season runs from mid-June to mid-September. The absolute peak is the first fortnight of August. For August, book at least 4-5 months ahead. June and September offer the best value. The island is visitable in spring too (April-May), when the Mediterranean scrub is in flower and beaches are deserted.

Getting around the island

Favignana is best explored by bicycle: the island is about 9 km long and gradients are minimal. Bike hire is available at the port and in the centre. Scooters and electric cars are also available but not necessary. There are no regular public buses. Boats connect Favignana to Levanzo and Marettimo for day trips.
