Telč: Moravia's Most Perfect Renaissance Square, Far from the Crowds
Telč is the crowd-free alternative to Český Krumlov: a fairytale Renaissance square, sgraffito-decorated houses and a castle reflected in the lake.

When geometry becomes poetry
The square of Telč is one of those visions a traveler encounters only once in a lifetime and never forgets. A sequence of Renaissance and Baroque houses with pointed gables, facades decorated with sgraffito, arcaded porticos reflected in the water of the lakes encircling the old town. It feels like stepping into a painting — but without the crowds that beset Český Krumlov, its more famous neighbor. In Telč, you can still sit on a bench in the square and hear nothing but the sound of bells.
What to see in Telč
Náměstí Zachariáše z Hradce — the square
Everything in Telč revolves around the square, named after the lord who transformed it in the 16th century. Zachariáš z Hradce, captivated by Italy during a journey to Genoa, had the entire square rebuilt in the Italian Renaissance style. The result is a harmonious sequence of sgraffito-decorated facades — geometric motifs, mythological figures, heraldic crests — that has no equal north of the Alps. Each house differs in color and detail, yet the ensemble achieves a remarkable coherence.
The Castle
Telč's castle, at the far end of the square, was also rebuilt in the Italian Renaissance style. Its interiors are visited with a guide (two routes available): the Knights' Hall with its gilded coffered ceiling, the chapel with 16th-century frescoes, the English garden overlooking the lakes. The castle tower offers the finest view over the square and the mirror of water that encircles the town.
The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus and the walls
The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus (Jesuits, 17th century) is an example of restrained Baroque. Beside it, the tower of the Church of St James is reachable on foot and rewards you with another perspective on the town. The partially preserved ancient walls can be walked along the lakeside — a 45-minute loop that is the best way to understand the city's defensive structure.
What to eat
Telč is a small town, but Czech gastronomic tradition does not disappoint:
- Svíčková na smetaně — beef sirloin in sour cream sauce with lingonberries and knedlíky (Czech bread dumplings), the quintessential national dish
- Vepřo knedlo zelo — roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, the Czech Sunday lunch
- Trdelník — a spit-roasted chimney cake, crisp outside and soft within, dusted with sugar and walnuts
- Craft beer — the Czech Republic is the homeland of beer, and Telč has its own local breweries
Švehlova Pekárna restaurant on the square serves traditional cuisine with a view; for a beer and something less formal, look for U Černého Orla.
How to get there
Telč lies on the Moravian plateau, halfway between Prague (160 km) and Vienna (150 km). It has no direct station on the main railway line: you arrive by train to Kostelec u Jihlavy (6 km, with a bus connection) or to Jihlava (25 km). By car, it sits on the road between Prague and Vienna, easily combined with a visit to Slavonice or Jindřichův Hradec. From Vienna, about 2 hours by car. Student Agency buses connect Telč to Prague (2.5 hours) and Brno (2 hours).
When to go
May to September is the ideal period. The castle is open from April to October. In summer the square hosts music festivals and artisan markets. September is perhaps the perfect month: warm light, few visitors, mild temperatures. Winter is cold, but the snow-covered square is a quietly beautiful sight worth the journey.
An authentic alternative
If Český Krumlov feels too crowded — and it does — Telč is the answer. The same beauty, the same fairytale atmosphere, but with one fundamental difference: here it is you who choose when to stop, not the crowd that moves you along.
